OSMOSIS MODEL - Table Top Learning in Biology

OSMOSIS MODEL - Table Top Learning is an exciting way for you to teach the tricky concept of osmosis to your students of Biology. It is particularly appropriate for use in G C S E and I G C S E Biology lessons, but not exclusively so.

We all know how challenging the concept of osmosis can be for our students. Many years ago, when I first taught osmosis, my students commonly experienced difficulties grasping the meanings of keywords and struggled to understand their interrelationships. Unsurprisingly, their written work and contributions to discussions often revealed misconceptions and muddled thinking. In response, I developed what I call, Table Top Learning. This learning method has proven revolutionary in my classroom. I find my students engage enthusiastically with it and are better able to explain challenging concepts such as osmosis with greater fluency and accuracy.

The osmosis model is versatile and can be used in a variety of different ways:

**A. Teacher led model demonstrations ** (refer to video)

i. Use the model to revise or introduce students to the concept of solutions.
ii. Use the model to revise or introduce students to the concept of diffusion.
iii. Use the model to introduce students to the concept of osmosis.

Construct model solutions of varying concentrations on each side of the model membrane. Ask your students to predict, demonstrate and explain the movement of free water molecules. Use a Socratic style of questioning. The concepts of net movement, water potential and equilibrium etc. can gradually be introduced and illustrated with use of keywords.

B. Each student interacts with his or her own copy of the table top learning model

Set a series of problems for each student to solve independently. For example, describe and explain the net movement of water molecules across a selectively-permeable membrane when the solution on one side of the membrane is more dilute than that on the other.

C. Small groups of students interact with a copy of the table top learning model

An opportunity for students to engage in cooperative or peer to peer learning.

Easy preparation

  • Components of the paper model include: water molecules, glucose molecules, sodium ions, chloride ions, cell membrane and keywords
  • Color print all paper model pages
  • For greater durability, laminate all pages
  • Cut out individual components from each laminated page. Use your school’s paper guillotine in order to save time.
  • Printable storage labels are included with this pack. Store different model components in separate envelopes for easy storage and quick retrieval.
