Top resources to help you to kick-start learning and re-engage your students in the new term

Going back to work after the holidays is never easy, so we’ve hand-picked a selection of resources to help make the transition back into school life as seamless as possible for both you and your learners.

New Year assembly

Start the new year as you mean to go on and set clear expectations and aspirations for your students. An assembly on resolutions and random acts of kindness is ideal for reinvigorating pupils at the start of term.

New Year Assembly 2018

This assembly has a focus on the RAOK challenge - random acts of kindness and is planned to be around 15 minutes long.
I played the video at the start to keep the students engaged as they entered and it worked really well.
Half way through there is another video where people are asked if one person can change the world. My head boy and girl then took over reading a script provided, telling the story of a "RAOK" movement called the karma army (this could quite easily be done by yourself). The assembly concludes with ways in which the students can carry out random acts of kindness and also looking at school charities.

Hope this is useful and saves you some time.

Set resolutions

Consider effective resolution-making with your students and discuss how to write meaningful targets.

My New Year's Resolution

This powerpoint introduces pupils to the concept of reflective practice, through writing a review of the year and New Year's resolution. It takes them through 4 common steps of reflective practice - recall, evaluation, analysis and forming an action plan. Aimed at upper KS2, this could be adapted for younger KS2 pupils.

There are literacy, numeracy and thinking skill activities - all with a New Year theme. Answer sheets are provided for the three maths activities and for the crossword.
