Resources to start conversations and raise awareness about the importance of mental health

Every year on the second Monday of May, Mental Health Awareness week commences around a major topic to encourage conversation and raise awareness. So, to start conversations in your school and help your students understand the importance of mental health, we have brought together a selection of assemblies, lessons and mindfulness activities you can use throughout the week to support your students.

Assemblies and lessons

Lesson on Happiness and Mental Wellbeing

This was my second attempt at trying to develop a programme on mental wellbeing. This lesson is on happiness and how doing enriching activities and setting smart goals can help us to feel happy. I used this with Yr10 but I guess it could be used from Yr9-13. I have uploaded (what seems like) lots of files but they are just the worksheets I created to go with the lesson.

Mental Health / Stress Assembly

A mental health awareness assembly with a focus on how to care for and manage your mental health. It lasts 15-20 mins (inc short clip) and explores why mental health issues are so prevalent in young people today, what the most common conditions are, the symptoms and causes and finally where and how you can access help. The slides shown are just a sample as the whole assembly follows a narrative revisiting the students on the cover slide.

Body Image Assembly

This assembly focuses on the importance of having a positive body image. The assembly looks at how positive words and attitudes are important for ensuring that we have positive emotional wellbeing. The assembly also focuses on:

Not judging people;
Accepting and celebrating;
Social media;
Unkind words;
Media comparisons
Low self-esteem.

It starts with four questions for students to privately reflect on and finishes with the same four questions where we will guide students in terms of a response.
