Learning English through songs

Learning English through songs

Reading literary works at intermediate levels often implies the use of abridged versions adapted to the linguistic competence of the students in question . Yet, even when these kinds of books ensure comprehension, they “kill” the style of the original work, as well as the richness and versatility of the language. Abridged versions present at least two main drawbacks: they are not authentic material, and since they are texts used only as a means to display language structure, there is little, or no engagement at the discourse level, on the part of the student. Song lyrics represent authentic material; they do not need to be abridged because they can be selected according to the students’ linguistic level of competence. They resemble poetry and lend themselves to be used to the teaching of literary theory. Besides, listening to songs facilitate language acquisition and help students develop phonological awareness “Music has the ability to facilitate language acquisition, reading readiness, and general intellectual development....... to enhance creativity and to promote social development, personality adjustment, and self-worth.” (Weinberger, N.1998 P 56, 36-40)

Differentiated Christmas Comprehension for Song 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' by Wizzard

Differentiated Christmas Comprehension for Song 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' by Wizzard

This is a comprehension to use in English to jazz up your lessons when approaching Christmas. I would recommend it for (a high) year 2 and higher. It is based on the song 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' by Wizzard which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx4Cyhf_neUThere are four differentiated sheets with the lyrics of the songs and questions underneath. -Extended level: Retrieval and higher order thinking questions (Why, What does it mean..., Which word tells you that...)- Core: Focused more on simple retrieval from the text.- Lower Core/Nurture: Simple retrieval from the text but scaffolded multiple choice for half of the questions.- Nurture, SEN, EAL: Using the song and text children write words to match picture (vocab), find adjectives used to describe things and draw scenes from the song/label them.

Reading and writing skills - EDM (more fun task)

Reading and writing skills - EDM (more fun task)

This resource is an article about Electronic Dance Music (which many of my lower ability pupils like), with questions matched up to the new AQA Paper 2 English Language GCSE - a true/false task and a language analysis task at the end to brainstorm. There is a separate worksheet which requires you to cut up the sentences so pupils can do a card sort, focusing on PEEL paragraphs and being able to identify which sentence performs which function. It is aimed at a lower-middling ability class, but you can differentiate and ask higher ability pupils to focus on planning the language analysis task without the paragraph/PEEL sheet (which they could present to the class).Skills: analysis, synthesis, interpretation, close reading, paragraph writing, P E E, reading skills, language analysis, true or false
