Listening Comprehension - 13 Reasons Why (episode 6)

Listening Comprehension - 13 Reasons Why (episode 6)

*** answer key includedThis is a listening comprehension for the 6th episode of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. Formatting and the answer key will make your life easier. Simply print and make copies. I also included a writing journal (opinion question related to the episode watched), which can be completed at school or as homework. This series is excellent, and I would even dare to say better than the book as I find the characters better developed. Even though, like the book, the TV series discusses suicide, the TV series allows for additional discussions as each episode adds characters and therefore secondary storylines. This is a wonderful TV show to get the students to discuss issues related to their everyday life such as peer pressure, family unit, friendship, ... Plus, it raises awareness.I have created listening comprehensions for other episodes of the series. The difficulty level of listening comprehension progresses as the series advances. It is therefore perfect to assess the progression of a student's learning. Notes from my past experiences and my applied linguistics studies if this evaluation is intended for ESL/EFL learners:* Linguistics and language acquisition studies show that active listening, such as completing a listening comprehension evaluation, benefits ESL learners much more than passive listening. It gives their listening a purpose and focuses students on trying to figure out the words and meaning.* According to language learning studies, the use of authentic material (meant for first language) provides more benefits than adapted material.* If possible, do not use subtitles when presenting a TV show or movie. My experience has shown me that students focus too much on reading the subtitles instead of trying to listen for understanding. Students may feel overwhelmed the first time but they will gain in confidence over time.* If there is a possibility, try to have each student watch and answer the listening comprehension individually. Provide them with a time frame as to when they must have completed the evaluation and returned it to the teacher. This way you are certain to evaluate their listening skills and not their abilities to listen and write all at once. It also helps students with learning difficulties.

ESL New Beginnings: First Day of School Activities

ESL New Beginnings: First Day of School Activities

Having a student who is both new to the United States and new to the English language can be a little daunting for teachers. This resource, which I’ve used with my 7th and 8th grade Newcomers classes, is full of ideas, activities, and word work for the first day of school. The focus is to make the students comfortable, help them get to know some of their classmates, and teach them enough English language to have their basic needs met while at school.CONTENTS INCLUDE:Stuffed Animal Name Toss: a fun game that’s sure to get even the most frightened student smiling.Survival Language: A classroom poster (offered in both in color and in black and white) to help students remember how to make basic requests to use the restroom and get a drink of water, as well as ask for directions to the bus and to the cafeteria. Hang on the wall, or give a copy to each student for reference.Survival Language Activity Sheet: Using the Survival Language sheet, students will practice reading the questions, matching the symbols with the questions, and writing the questions. Nametag Template: Students can fold the paper in half to make a standing name tag with their name and illustrations of their favorite sport and favorite food.

20 Tech Enhanced Activities for the Language Classroom

20 Tech Enhanced Activities for the Language Classroom

This ebook was designed to be the first in a series of collections of the simple activities and ideas I have used over many years when delivering teaching and teacher training sessions that incorporate the use of digital technologies. The ideas use simple free tools that have stood the test of time and remained consistently reliable. The teaching ideas and activities themselves are ones that I have adapted from my pre-technology teaching days, so they are all built on sound classroom teaching practice. The activities are ideal for the modern connected classroom in which students come to class with a variety of devices, but they can also be used in a blended context and students can be assigned some parts of the tasks to do outside of the classroom.I have also included a collection of 8 video tutorials to help less tech confident teachers deal with the technology side of using the materials.I hope these materials will act as a bridge for teachers who are newer or less confident at using digital tools and materials and help them provide engaging and motivating language learning experiences for their students.

GCSE - WRITING TO ARGUE- CLASS DEBATE POWERPOINT, including plans, judge rules and debate questions.

GCSE - WRITING TO ARGUE- CLASS DEBATE POWERPOINT, including plans, judge rules and debate questions.

Tried and tested! Here's how it works:The animated PowerPoint has a slide for each step of this WHOLE LESSON plan! The class decide between two debate questions (on the powerpoint slide). The class are split into two groups (for and against) and have to complete the 'debate plan sheet' in their groups. One person is picked to be judge. I picked the person who normally causes disruptions and found giving this pupil a role helped to include them/control behaviour issues. The judge has the 'you have been chosen to be the judge' sheet which explains their rules. The judge also fills out the 'Judge Plan' sheet (so they are working whilst the rest of the class is too).A truly lovely lesson - the class enjoyed it and so did I. Great to hear opinions being shared by all pupils. Great practice for GCSE writing to argue questions.
