La Famille Jolineau en vacances is a bilingual ( French/English) Ebook.

La Famille Jolineau en vacances is a bilingual ( French/English) Ebook.

La Famille Jolineau en vacances is a bilingual fun story book for primary school children, usable from KS1. In the first part of the book, children can learn about family members; which activities/ leisure each member likes or does not like doing; saying names and age. After this introductory part, the book follows the family on holiday in Brittany, spending the day on the beach. This can be used as part of lessons on family, holidays and likes and dislikes. There is a cultural focus on le goûter ( the special after school French snack!) and activities at the back of the book on colours and days of the week. A section on silent consonants is an additional useful tool. Throughout the book, a little ladybird is asking questions to encourage active reading. Further , the silent consonants are marked in red.

Francophoniques

Francophoniques

These 3 slides represent different lessons (with French phonics I wouldn't introduce all the sounds & gestures in one lesson, which I do do for Spanish and German versions). The methodology is to introduce the word with the picture, the sound of the word and a gesture. Students say the word and do the gesture. Build up through the different words/sounds progressively, making sure that you do the gestures always. You can stop saying the words quite soon and elicit them from the students just with the gestures. Following this lesson students need lots of opportunities to embed the knowledge and apply it to new language - there a a million and one different activities you can use to build in a 'phonics' starter to most lessons - in this way the knowledge gets really embedded. The gestures become a physical language that the teacher can use to cue learners in to correct pronunciation when the mother tongue patterns threaten to re-assert themselves!

French Phonics to Phrases: reading scheme for KS2

French Phonics to Phrases: reading scheme for KS2

We created a set of French phonics cards based upon a central idea of giving each phoneme a child character personification. These characters form the French Phonic Friends, whose names include the grapheme for their phonics card. Pupils progressed from learning the sound to segmenting and blending words on the card, to reading phrases. Resources from 'Links into Languages', Crown Copyright. Expo 1 - French Alphabet

Expo 1 - French Alphabet

Great lesson, teaching the French alphabet to beginners. Based on Expo 1 French alphabet spread, but can be used for any age group. Starter builds on previous knowledge and asks students to find basic greetings in a grid. Practice with the sounds of the French alphabet follows, with two games. Mini whiteboard activity to spell the mystery character's name is next, followed by the question 'Comment ça s'écrit' and the students noting the answer for their own names (and those of extended family, pets etc. if teacher wishes). An introduction to French accents is the last activity, with a Blockbusters game to review and consolidate learning to finish. Engaging way to present alphabet, fully animated with notes under each activity for teacher if required. Great fun to teach!

French sound dictionary

French sound dictionary

I give this to pupils and whenever they come across a new word that they had to think about how to say, they add it to the relevant list in here. This has worked wonders in getting them to think about common letter patterns and how they sound, and their confidence with speaking has really improved. I use this alongside the materials I've produced on phonics, which can be found here: http://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/French-phonics-work-tons-of-stuff-3013522/ http://www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/French-phonics-work-2-3013523/
