Hexagonal Numbers (Cross-number Puzzle)

This resource consists of a cross-number puzzle whose solution involves the calculation of hexagonal numbers. Geometric diagrams are given for the first few hexagonal numbers. Students will then have to devise methods to calculate larger such numbers. The Teachers Guide outlines three possible investigative approaches to these calculations. One involves generalising using the given geometric patterns. The other two approaches involve investigating numerical patterns which then leads to the construction of a nth term formula. One is through patterns in a difference table and the other involves patterns in the numerical factors of the hexagonal numbers. The answers to the puzzle clues are also given in the Teachers Guide.

Substitution No 2 (Cross-Number Puzzle)

Completion of this cross-number puzzle involves evaluation of algebraic expressions involving squaring and the use of brackets. Most of the calculations can be performed without the use of a calculator. Students should be encouraged to only use a calculator as a final checking process. There is also a double-check built in due to the overlapping structure of the cross-number grid so students should be encouraged to calculate all the clues not just a minimal set.The answers and further suggestions are provided in the teacher's guide.

Codebreaker - Algebraic Substitution

Suitable for a lesson activity or homework for a Foundation GCSE or KS3 teaching group. Students find the values, convert to letters and an easy progress check can be made by asking the students what it spells!

Geometry: Real Life Graphs - Drawing and Interpreting rates of change (+ resources)

This is an excellent look at different questions on rates of change and drawing real life graphs. This is one of the new "hot" topics for KS4 / GCSE as well as being appropriate for stronger groups at KS3.This Powerpoint gives lots of structure to the lesson, including an interesting starter, learning objectives, several matching exercises / MWB activities, a worksheet with answers and a challenging plenary. This lesson is a great accompaniment to my lesson on travel graphs and together helps pupils becoming much better at interpreting and drawing graphs. I have also uploaded a very large 4 lesson bundle of linear graphs, which might also be helpful to do at the same time.NOTE: Feel free to browse my shop for more excellent free and premium resources and as always please rate and feedback, thanks.

Substitution Lesson

A series of lessons (2-4) based on substitution. The lesson has separate tasks for positive and negative numbers and also allows pupils to work with shape problems. The lesson then stretches pupils to deal with substituting in to mathematical forumlae. I have used formulae such as Pythagoras, Trapezium, Sine and Cosine aswell as volume of cones/spheres in order to prepare for pupils for these formulas at KS4. Quadratic Formula is also included. All tasks are differentiated either 3 or 4 levels. All tasks have solutions so pupils can self mark with some of the solutions handwritten so pupils can see a full worked solutions. This has been used with classes of varying ability and all have been able to access the lesson up to their desired ability. There are problem solving tasks, reasoning tasks ect to suit the new 9-1 curriculum. This has been taught to top set year 7 and set 3 year 10 who were fully engaged and liked the challenge of working with new formulae.

Substitution Thoughts and Crosses

A Thought and Crosses on Substitution. It works on the basics and links it to shape and formulae problems suitable for the new curriculum. All solutions are included to ensure that it is easy to mark.Look in my shop for a full lesson on this topic

Solving Algebraic Fractions - New Curriculum

The lesson starter involves solving equations to get students into the frame of mind to consider inverse operations. The powerpoint also includes some exam questions including more difficult examples where the subject appears twice. Some students might require some reminders on factorising and expanding within the lesson too.

Pupils choose which colour they feel confident attempting. If they are really confident they should choose green, the secure option, if they are struggling they should choose the red or amber option (foundation – basic assessment of skill, amber is a little bit harder).Pupils show the questions, working out and answers that they have attempted in their class book.Pupils self assess or peer assess at the end of each activity to show themselves how much progress they have made.Answers provided. Terms of use; Please use only by the customer paying for the resource.Printing tip; Print - fit to page or fill entire page so they only print on A4.
