KS3 KS4 Spanish - SKILLS - How to use a dictionary effectively / Aste Nagusia

KS3 KS4 Spanish - SKILLS - How to use a dictionary effectively / Aste Nagusia

This is the resource that I have prepared for both GCSE and KS3 classes. It can be used as a template as the only thing you would change is the text and the words. I believe the full set of slides needs to be used several times until a group of students remember the sequence of actions. The only thing left is to continue revisiting to gain confidence in using the dictionary! The text that I chose to introduce this task is based upon short cultural texts on the topics of a Basque festival, Aste Nagusia, and Las Hogueras de San Juan. Students look through the first text and analyse the explanation of different things one can find next to the Spanish word in a dictionary. Then they compete (a game!=team challenge) to translate the words. Then they work in teams to figure out how to use the bi-lingual dictionary effectively - they analyse simple words used in classroom language and try to find their meaning in Spanish at the same time not forgetting to pay attention to gender of the nouns and adjectival agreement (extension - they think of more examples of words they could use). For KS4 students you might add another level of difficulty - include verbs in English in different tenses and let them decide how to correctly translate these verbs in Spanish. Finally they have a look at the second text and try translating it themselves into English (or given words / very simple text if KS3) The most important thing in my point of view is to remember that translating is an art not a precise science! NOTE: I used a dictionary cut outs from the internet which is most likely an extract from Collins Eng-Sp and Sp-Eng dictionary.

Mexico & Cinco de Mayo - Juego de preguntas encadenadas

Mexico & Cinco de Mayo - Juego de preguntas encadenadas

This game is designed to practice the vocabulary related to Mexico and the Cinco de Mayo celebration. INSTRUCTIONS This game is a version of the classic I-Have-Who-Has game. Print the document one-sided, laminate and cut out the cards. Distribute all the cards randomly to the students. The ideal number of players is 5 (4 cards for each student), but it will also work with 2 to 10 players. For bigger classes, you might want to print several copies. Select a student to begin the game by reading his card out loud and then putting it down. The other students listen attentively to each question, answer it if they have the answer card and then they read the next question. The game is over when all the cards are down. It is a great game to practice the newly taught vocabulary, as well as reading and listening skills.

El calendario - Card Game

El calendario - Card Game

This game is a Spanish version of the classic " I have… Who has …? " game, designed to practice revising a unit on weather and clothes by asking and answering about seasons, weather, months, days of the week, birthdays, holidays, numbers, clothes etc. This is an easy-to-play game and a great way to practice essential language concepts with the whole class. As students match up the answers on their cards with questions on other students’ cards, they get valuable practice with vocabulary, as well as reading and listening skills. Directions: Cut out the cards along the dotted line and laminate. For bigger classes, you might want to print several copies of each set. Give out all the cards in the set to the students. It is important to use all the cards. Choose a student to go first. I usually do that by a counting rhyme. Have the selected student read the question at the bottom of the card aloud and then put the card down. The student who has the card with the answer then reads that answer aloud. This student will then read the question at the bottom of their card and put the card down. Play continues in this fashion until all of the cards have been played. The game will end with the same student who started play. Every card in the set is connected to a card before it and a card after it. To keep the game moving at a quick pace, all students need to pay attention to every question that has been asked. I tell my younger students that this is a magic game and that the magic only works if you pay attention, which is actually true. The magic happens in the end, when the question on the last card actually matches the answer on the very first card. Enjoy!

Spanish Halloween lesson - Halloween en Español - ¿De qué te disfrazas?

Spanish Halloween lesson - Halloween en Español - ¿De qué te disfrazas?

A fantastically engaging and spooky Halloween lesson for both Primary and Key stage 3. This lesson compromises introducing Halloween costumes in Spanish and has the objective of being able to say what you are dressing up as for Halloween in Spanish by the end of the lesson. The objective is achieved through engaging games such as choral repetition, beat the teacher, "which is missing?". Once the vocabulary has been practiced with the pupils, it is time for them to get out of their seats and solve a mystery involving the characters to whom they have just been introduced! The mystery involves solving a number of clues by answering questions in Spanish based on familiar vocabulary. The pupils take the first letter of each answer and are left with an anagram of the culprit to the crime. The first pupil/pair/team to rearrange the anagram and find the culprit are the winners. Once the mystery is solved, the pupils learn how to ask and answer what they are dressing up as, for Halloween. They are also encouraged to challenge themselves by giving reasons for their chosen costume by learning a number of Halloween related adjectives. The pupils then consolidate this new vocabulary by undertaking a survey of other pupils in the room to find out their Halloween costumes. Note: The clues in the "Who stole the Queen's lunch" should be cut up and placed around the room for the pupils to read. Mix these up so that they don't reveal the answer too easily! Included in the survey slide and the "¿quién es el culpable?" slide are 2 embedded videos with Spanish Halloween songs to create a spooky atmosphere for when the pupils undertake the tasks. Also included in this lesson are Halloween Flashcards, these are to be used as the "suspects" when solving the mystery. It is useful to print these off and lay them out somewhere visible for the pupils when solving the anagram as they include the correct spellings.

End of term quiz for Spanish younger students. It consists of 10 rounds (90 questions altogether). Each slide of the presentation contains one question and some visual clues to help students answer. The quiz is based mainly on general knowledge of Spain and Spanish culture, although some test the students' knowledge of Spanish. 34 of the questions are based on a short video or music clip, which opens when the count-down animated icon is clicked. They can also be downloaded an played manually if the links don't work. The ten rounds are Music, Art, Sports, Maths, Geography, TV, Food and Drink, People, I love Spanish and A Bit of Everything. I have also included the answers to the questions and an answer sheet. Update: I have now included a PowerPoint version of the main file, converted from the original Notebook file. I recommend whenever possible to use the original version, as the file conversion has changed the layout of some slides and some features work less effectively on Power Point.
