Canadian Rivers Wordsearch Geography Literacy Starter Activity Homework Cover Lesson Plenary

Canadian Rivers Wordsearch Geography Literacy Starter Activity Homework Cover Lesson Plenary

Wordsearch on the theme of 'Canadian Rivers'. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Developing Global Thinkers An IB PYP Inquiry into Flags of the World

Developing Global Thinkers An IB PYP Inquiry into Flags of the World

Global Thinkers are internationally minded. They are knowledgeable about the world that they live in. They ask questions about the world. They are knowledgeable about different cultures and their traditions.. They are open-minded to the differences in our world. This inquiry based activity was designed for 3rd-6th grades to learn about the world through their flags, using the IB PYP Learner Profile and Key Concepts as the focus of thinking. USA &UK spelling. The activity takes the form of a Global Passport. The pages can be mixed and matched and created into a booklet. Easy to differentiate. As the flags are introduced to the children, they will complete the pages of the passport, developing their research skills and knowledge of the countries in question. This can be completed over the course of the school year as flags are introduced, as a collaborative group/partner activity within another unit of inquiry, independent homework assignment or a geography and mapping activity. The options are endless. Included: 10 mix and match, print and go pages Front and back cover for the Global Passport Log for recording countries explored. Certificate of completion for Global Thinkers A whole class activity for international mindedness Selection of 36 world flags to use as reference slides or for cutting and gluing into the passport. Teacher instructions and student’s examples. You can find many more inquiry based ideas and resources on my blog and in my store. Enjoy! Susan Powers www.PYPteachingtools.com

Cold Environments

Cold Environments

This is a bundle of 11 lessons and covers the "Cold Environments" option from the new AQA GCSE. Includes Homeworks and an end of unit assessment. Also included is a lesson on Sir John Franklin's mission to discover the Northwest Passage. It's not in the spec, but I've always wanted to plan and teach it. This unit took well over 50 hours to plan, so please save yourself some time... (and buy me a beer). My lessons are planned and taught using Smart Notebook, but PDFs are also included. The Case Study used for development opportunities and challenges is ALASKA. Please note: A couple of these lessons require the Arctic with Bruce Parry DVD. (£6-7 from Amazon). It's excellent. Thanks for looking.

Development Challenges in Alaska

Development Challenges in Alaska

Title: Why isn't everyone rushing to Alaska? Aim: To create a video outlining 4 challenges to development in Alaska. HOMEWORK INCLUDED - 9 Mark case study question with plan. (Same as previous lesson, but now it's time to set it). Worth knowing... This lesson has two parts. The first part is a game I designed which the kids love and you'll use over and over again. This alone can take a lesson. The second part requires them to make group videos outlining challenges to development. We have flip cams at my school, but the students could use their phones. Lego/playdough also helps.
