Dragons' Den Persuasive Project! (Building Speaking & Listening and Persuasive Writing Skills!)

(1)
This resource is perfect for enabling students to build both their persuasive writing and their speaking and listening skills. Based upon the popular BBC series 'Dragons' Den', students have the opportunity to research, design, pitch, and evaluate arguments for their own inventions, whilst simultaneously analysing persuasive pitches, revising persuasive techniques, structuring arguments and articulating convincingly. Included is a 16 page booklet (I would say at least 4-5 hour lessons of tasks) that lead students to: - Introduce themselves and their interests; - Watch persuasive pitches (links included) and identify persuasive devices; - Analyse why persuasive devices are effective; - Structure an analysis appropriately; - Brainstorm ideas for an invention using imagination and helpful aiding questions; - Formulate an argument by considering key questions and counter arguments; - Write and present a persuasive pitch; - Peer-evaluate and self-evaluate persuasive pitches. I have also provided some examples of news stories featuring the worst and best pitches from the den, in order to provoke discussion about what makes a strong pitch. All images are licensed for commercial use and are cited throughout.

Persuasive writing, climate change

(1)
A three week KS2 writing unit with a powerful environmental theme. All lesson plans, PowerPoints and activitiy resources included - it’s ready to go. Pupils explore a one-sided argument about fossil fuels, and then create their own persuasive writing about food waste. Turn your class into eco-heroes! Teach children about persuasive devices, and encourage them to use these skills to make a positive change. I used this project in Y4, but it could be quickly adapted for any KS2 class - all resources are fully editable. If you buy this resource, ignore the preview images (these are just png screen shots) and open the zip folder. Inside this folder, you will find full versions of all plans, presentations and tasks, organised into lesson-by-lesson folders for ease of use. Please also see my new ‘climate change’ unit, Waste Monsters, aimed at upper KS2. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-12966461

Persuasive Writing - KS3 (Chocolate Project)

(0)
A KS3 project (three-four lessons) to prepare students for a persuasive presentation on a chocolate bar they have designed. This resource is designed to prepare students for the following skills: Persuasive writing AFOREST devices Speaking and listening Understanding target audiences and purpose of text Improving vocabulary for non-fiction writing Lesson 1: LO: To analyse how advertisements use techniques to cater to differing audiences. Students watch advertisements of chocolate bars, exploring and discussing target audiences and persuasive techniques used in the adverts. Lesson 2: LO: To analyse how language is used to create effects and to persuade audiences. Students extend vocabulary to describe chocolates. Students practice using AFOREST devices to describe them and think about target audiences (packaging, flavour, etc.). You can either give the students the chocolates to taste, or you can just based this lesson on their knowledge of the chocolate flavours already. Lesson 3: LO: To create a speech that uses AFOREST and language devices to persuade audiences. Students to plan and create a chocolate bar of their own design, ready to present to the class. Students to vote on which chocolate bar was the most persuasive in its pitch to the target audience chosen by the student. Optional - extend L3 to a full writing lesson, followed by L4 as speaking and listening lesson.

Persuasive letter writing example

I couldn't find a text on line which provided the example of what I was looking for in a model persuasive letter. So I wrote one (and wish that i had done earlier as it was quicker) This is a letter to the head teacher which tries to persuade them to get rid of school uniform. It can be used as a model text to look at with the children to identify features and language. It could be used a starting letter to be up-leveled and improved We used it as the 'Imitate' text at the beginning of a T4W cycle Hope you find it useful and it saves you some time.

Persuasive Writing

(0)
This SOW includes a variety of lessons/activities focusing on recapping persuasive devices and how to apply these when writing in different non-fiction formats. I have pitched this to high-ability KS3 students but it can easily be adapted to GCSE students when looking at AQA Language Paper 2 (Question 5) The SOW also has a media focus with topics such as sensationalism in the media and how this persuades/manipulates society, as well as the ethicality of this. There is also a focus on controversial debate topics and how to form and express a justifiable opinion (again tying in nicely with AQA Lang Paper 2: Section B).

Persuasive Writing - Emotive Language

(0)
A focus on the impact of emotive language in persuasive writing. One paragraph written with negative emotive language and one written with positive emotive language - both persuading for the same thing. Use this resource to help your pupils pick out the vocabulary and phrases which have an impact on the reader’s emotions and feelings. Ask: What is the overall feeling after reading the paragraph? Give them the paragraph using negative emotive language and ask them to re-write it, changing to positive emotive language but keeping the persuasive sway the same. Or vice versa. A great challenge! Use these paragraphs as a stimulus to writing their own persuasive paragraph with a choice of using negative or positive emotive language.

Persuasive writing and balanced discussion

(4)
Orally rehearse the language of persuasive writing and balanced discussion before writing using these dice games, model texts, planning frames and toolkits. Throughout Key Stage 2, children are expected to take part in debates and compose one-sided arguments or balanced discussions. To be successful at this, children need plenty of opportunities to use the language of argument. Connecting phrases such as ‘it is obvious that’, ‘other people claim that’ and ‘opponents of’ need to be orally rehearsed as children do not encounter them regularly in their daily lives. This fully planned session, complete with a presentation and a fun dice game, will give children the experience of using the language of argument in a purposeful way. Use this session prior to any ‘argument’ style writing and it will give children the tools to be successful. *I have now added ‘Whose side are you on? Advanced’. This version is for 4 players and enables children to create full balanced discussions orally. The patterns they use exactly mirror the structure of a written balanced discussion. **I have also added a model text, a planning frame and a self assessment sheet for persuasive writing and a model text, a planning frame and a self assessment sheet for discussion writing. ***I have also added: a one sided model text in favour of Victorian style child punishment (for children to argue against!) a one sided model against mobile phones in school for children to argue ‘for’ a mobile phone fact or opinion sorting activity a one sided model for animals in circuses for children to argue against a one sided argument against computer games for children to argue ‘for’ a computer games counter argument activity a computer games fact or opinion sorting activity a for and against sorting activity linked with space a for and against sorting activity linked with aliens
