Is Curley's Wife really that bad? This lesson includes some outstanding resources that use differentiated questioning and focus to meet the needs of ALL learners. The activity worksheets are classified in target grades so that you can group students according to ability and includes a 'Magpie' activity for your very most able. This lesson teaches students the STILT(s) acronym for poetry comparison, this could be used to teach comparison skills as well as teaching specific comparison points on these two poems from the Edexcel Relationship Collection. The lesson is challenging and aims to take students grades to the top levels. It includes engaging 'thunks', activities, guidance, exemplar paragraphs and guided questions and processes that could be applied to other pairs of poems. If you only buy one lesson in this series, this would be a useful one to begin to tie together the use of structure, narrative, themes and characters. This lesson is differentiated (Group 3 is definitely harder than any of the other group tasks) and facilitates students' engagement with the real purpose of this chapter through paired and group question led activities.

This resource bundle includes an Assembly based on the Holocaust Memorial Trust theme of ‘the power of words’ and considers both the ethos of the Trust in honouring survivors whilst also focusing on the importance of ‘words’ to ensure discrimination and prejudice are eliminated from our society. This assembly is interactive with a link to a video about the latest recordings of Eva Schloss and offers students some practical ways to get involved with Holocaustian projects post assembly. The assembly is fully scripted and ready to use and is accompanied by a handout about some of the projects mentioned in the assembly for tutors to explore during tutor/PSHE time for potential ongoing individual and whole school involvement.

This engaging and visually appealing revision aid includes contextual information, tasks, key quotations that link to the context and an engaging game to help reinforce students understanding of the background to Shakespeare's play. This is a constructed paper based on an extract from one of Primo Levi's Holocaust survivor novels. This is accessible for KS3 and KS4 and has been designed with the Holocaust Memorial Day in mind as an apt activity during that week, although this would prove to be useful practice and revision at any time of the year too. This resource explores the second Part of this curious novel investigating themes, links to non fiction, research tasks, comprehension tasks, links to International Mark Schemes (if required) and character studies. This book is unusual and engaging, as such it would make an excellent Reading Group study, Extra Curricular Reading Study, Stretch and Challenge, independent novel study, exemplar of ‘how to’ teach a novel for an NQT and a great resource to use for KS3 tutoring or teaching alike.

This paper is constructed and is based on exploration of the natural world. This might work particularly well for boys as it is engaging (and a little gruesome, in parts). The questions follow the style of the Edexcel specimen assessment materials and I’ve also included a detailed indicative content to work with the mark scheme so that this is useful for parents, homeschooled learners, PRUs, tutors, independent students and teachers alike. This resource covers all of the poems and includes a wide range of questions to help refresh and round off learning, it has been designed to increase engagement with language, structure, form and the context of these poems. My own groups have found this resource immensely helpful in the final preparations for the exam this week. This is a perfect resource for very last minute revision, that odd lesson in which you’re not sure where the gaps might be, lunchtime catch ups, after school support, tutors, teachers, supply or parents wanting to help their students/children respectively.

This complete lesson is aimed at IGCSE students, but is equally suitable for use as an Unseen Poem, and encourages students to become increasingly independent in their learning. Small group tasks are set to encourage all abilities to be able to access this poem and the requirement to present their findings and set a fun task for their peers ensures that the focus is on enjoyment and ‘game play’ as much as learning. For less able groups questions are proffered to open discussion and then annotated stanzas are included either for use at face value or to top up the presentations. This lesson closes with some thought provoking questions that only make sense once the text has been studied. This is an engaging and active learning lesson that my students have always enjoyed for both its sense of freedom to find answers and support in finding out if they were in the right ball park.
