A complete writing unit for teaching explanation texts through writing one about the digestive system. It has been created with lower KS2 in mind but is easily adaptable.
Each ‘lesson’ is broken into chunks of learning rather than directly being a one hour lesson. This means some of the lessons may take more than an hour and be completed over a sequence of lessons instead, with the focus being on the learning and activities within this rather than ‘rushing’ through in an hour. Altogether, there is approximately two weeks worth of lessons, with slightly longer depending on how long drafting, redrafting and publishing take.
The unit includes lessons on:
Features of explanation texts
Cohesive devices
Research
Creating simple sentences
Drafting and redrafting
Publishing
All lesson PowerPoints with notes are included as well as a model text, a summary organiser about the digestive system, activity sheets and a explanation text summary sheet.

A sequence of lessons on light for Year 6 that includes an investigation. Included are the lesson presentations, any print outs required, a KWL grid to refer back to, a vocabulary triangle and a knowledge organiser.
A double lesson that focuses on being able to find fractions of amounts. Included is a PowerPoint for the lesson that includes an arithmetic starter as well as an activity with answers and four challenge activities for those that are confident.
A lesson that focuses on natural hazards, particularly in being able to identify the differences between climatic and tectonic hazards.
The lesson works well as an introductory lesson in teaching pupils about different natural hazards and understanding why these occur. There is everything needed to be able to deliver the lesson including the lesson PowerPoint, starter activity, three activities and support sheets.
The lesson starts with a starter focusing on the equator and tropics to prompt understanding of climate and weather conditions. This then moves on to identifying key vocabulary and introducing the idea of natural hazards.
Activity One then requires pupils to sort examples of natural hazards into climatic and tectonic. There is a cut and stick version of this with images or a separate version using written text for those looking to save on time and printing.
This then moves on to the second activity focusing on being able to identify similarities and differences between climatic and tectonic hazards. This is presented as a Venn diagram with a support sheet to help with ideas. However, there is also an alternative version of the activity should teachers wish to use it, with a reduced outcome through limited boxes available.
This is then followed up by more discussion and a review task to check understanding at the end of the lesson.
Additionally, a support sheet is provided with the key vocabulary, information and images from the PowerPoint all provided on one page for pupils to refer back to.
Attached are moderation grids for the interim statements (recently released 2016-2017) for Writing, Science and Maths. This includes working below and greater depth for writing and can be used as a simple tick box exercise. Whilst they include many potential tick boxes, these are in no way how many pieces of evidence you require.
An activity for children to do at the start of a new school year/ for class swap days. Get children to draw themselves, describe themselves, identify their favourite subjects and activities outside of school as well as getting children to set three targets (for in or out of school) and think of one thing new they would like to do in the next year.
A set of worksheets that were made for a Year 5 nouns lesson with three differentiated activities to complete. They worked well in my lesson so thought I would share them in case anyone else found them useful.
A Maths game that works on revising some key vocabulary such as prime numbers, multiples and using the greater than and less than symbol as well as opening up varied discussion about why particular numbers fit where they do or why they should be used elsewhere. Everything needed to play this is attached including an explanation of the rules. Perfect for a starter, plenary or just for a 5-10 minute break where they can practise some reasoning activities.
Attached is a version of a potential calculation policy that people can use for ideas to help in developing their own. Each year group is broken down in to the 4 operations, identifying mental and written methods and linking to other strands in the curriculum.
Written methods are kept to a minimum to ensure children become 'experts' in that method and to ensure consistency throughout teaching.
