The Bear in Bed - Image Based Lesson Plan

The Bear in Bed - Image Based Lesson Plan

‘Okay Goldilocks. How do you like it?’ This lesson is based on a single image of a bear lying in bed surrounded by books. The lesson includes a variety of discussion and conversation tasks that you can use to get students thinking and talking about the image. These are followed by language focus tasks and some more creative tasks. Finally, there are some suggestions for digital research and creation follow-up tasks. It’s not necessary to use all of the tasks in the plan, you can choose to use any of the tasks individually or change the order of the tasks depending on the approach you want to take and the level of your students.

Templates for Marking Spellings by their Syllables

Templates for Marking Spellings by their Syllables

Ten spellings may consist of thirty syllables and it is much more rewarding to gain 15/30 than 1/10. Not only is this great to boost confidence but students soon appreciate the value of learning their prefixes and suffixes. Students can see the same mistakes in different words. Syllables are small manageable chunks to learn, once learned they are transferable into hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of words. These are large font to make laminated dry wipes. Alternatively I print two pages onto A4 landscape, to go into the Lexicology A5 workbooks. This takes a little prep to do but my children enjoyed the freedom of moving about to get the tokens and match them to the definition of the term. It is fully editable so please feel free to add/remove terminology or create your own version. This resource includes 2 worksheets in which the children must solve what term is what and then write an example. They must finally find the terminology token and stick in correct box of the sheet. Hope this helps! Thanks.

Astronaut Jim - reading comprehension with True / False questions and creative activity

Astronaut Jim - reading comprehension with True / False questions and creative activity

This activity is for young ESL learners (aged 7 - 14). It is useful due to the fact that it deals with space vocabulary, repeats new words several times in the text to ensure that the words stick and has pictures that help children follow what is happening in the story. For stronger students, they will not need the pictures, but weaker students can use this to their advantage. The True / False questions aid their reading comprehension. You can also monitor their pronunciation as you can ask them to read out loud. Learning Objectives: To use the space vocabulary studied. To understand how an English story is set out on the page. To practise the present simple tense. To apply preexisting vocabulary to a new theme (colours to space for example) How I used this worksheet/recommended: Teach vocabulary to do with space (I used flashcards for this). Ask students what life is like on a different planet (elicit the words scary, exciting, fun etc.) Tell students that we are going to read a story about aliens. Children read out loud in turns. Children do the True/False by themselves. Correct as a class. Children ‘wind down’ by designing their own planet with aliens and labelling it. (Practises writing skills) This is an excellent activity which was received well by all my students, ranging from 7 to 12.

Noun Vs. Verb is a great new resource! Noun Vs. Verb has 9 pages of questions which explore a pupils understanding of whether a word is performing the role of a noun or a verb. Noun Vs.Verb has 3 distinct question styles. A simple labeling activity, where pupils must decide if the target word is acting as a noun or verb. In the second question style, learners must write a sentence using the target word as a noun, and then as a verb. The third activity is more in line with a classic KS2 SAT question, where pupils must fill in the blank, and identify the missing word that can be placed into both sentences. The resource pack has 9 pages and just over 100 questions for pupils to answer. Plus corresponding answers. The pages where pupils have to write a sentence, answers are not supplied. This is because there are potentially a huge amount of answers that pupils could provide. Perfect for a years worth of grammar lessons or some SATs preparation!!
