Gandhi and the Caste System

Gandhi and the Caste System

This lesson is designed to be adaptable to the needs of your class. It can build on previous knowledge of Gandhi, and works best if that is the case, but can also be used as an introduction to Gandhi’s teaching and life. (To this end, I’ve included a link of him burning the passes and his famous non violence speech that followed it, which are both short and excellent insights into his teaching and philosophy. On non violence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKzKj_8CO2g Burning of the passes (ahimsa):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50gNryy9JnA) It includes extension tasks for able and talented, and differentiated activities including ethical dilemmas, youtube videos, group discussions, treasure hunts as well as written tasks. A broad range of activities, in my experience, always bosters engagement. (there is a need to print 10 slides here) The lesson aims to remind students’ of Gandhi’s teachings and inform them of the Caste system. There is also a short video about Narayanan Krishnan, an inspirational Hindu who has disregarded his Brahmin caste to help untouchables or down and outs in Indian Society. 2 differently worded Learning Objectives here for lower and higher ability or age groups: To remember who Gandhi was. to explain what the caste system was. To know Gandhi’s opinion of the untouchables. To develop and evaluate my own opinion about the caste system. To empathise with people who are in the caste system. Or, for KS4, All will be able to explain what the caste system was, and why Gandhi was against it. Most will be able to relate the situation to contemporary issues re: jobs and status. Some will be able to explain why the caste system became a source of prejudice and discrimination.

This hand-drawn illustration of the Sand Cat is a great way to stir interest within children for endangered animals. Colouring in is a symbolic way to give endangered species significance and worth. Children will naturally be curious to find out more, or this sheet could form part of a project to learn why this animal is declining in the wild? Sand Cats are found in the North African and Middle Eastern deserts, where the roam across the desert mostly at night using their fur as camouflage. Sadly their habitat is being lost and they are hunted both for their furs, as well as for sport, hence their near threatened status. Colouring is a perfect means of relaxation, as well as a great tool for teaching colour, texture and of course, imagination.

Fake News Assembly

An assembly focusing on the dangers of fake news, how we recognise fake news and the importance of being aware of it. The assembly explores the fact that it was Hitler who invented the idea of fake news and then examines how he used it to gain power and control the public, before comparing it to the way politicians use fake news today. There are then slides which explore how to recognise fake news and what to do if you’re unsure. The slides shown are just a sample of those included. The whole assembly follows an easy narrative that can be used with no additional prep (although it is also editable should you want to). Best suited for secondary students. "Grit" assembly

“Grit” assembly This assembly has been put together by a Head of Year/Pastoral Leader and is designed to be delivered to a whole year group/house or used within tutor time/dinnertime club, or after school club etc. Aims To help students to: • Understand “persistence”. • Understand “resilience”. • Understand how persistence and resilience create the quality “grit”. This assembly deals with the issue of students giving up to easily. The assembly has 10 slides and one video clip. It will last 10-15 minutes, depending on how much audience participation you encourage. This assembly forms a series of assemblies (10-15 in total- which I will be adding in the near future) designed to build a positive year group identity, and to boost the resilience of individual students. “FOMO- Fear Of Missing Out” assembly This assembly has been put together by a Head of Year/Pastoral Leader and is designed to be delivered to a whole year group/house or used within tutor time/dinnertime club, or after school club etc. Aims To help students to: • Understand what FOMO is (Fear Of Missing OUT). • Understand how spending time on social media may be affecting you. • Understand how spending time on social media may be holding you back This assembly deals with/raises issues of: • Social anxiety • Mental health concerns associated with social media over-use • Depression • Peer pressure • Cyber bullying • Low self-esteem • Gossip • Telling lies/being fake • Physiological problems associated with late night phone screen-viewing (effects of blue light) • Sleep pattern disruption and effects on physical development • Trolls and haters • Internet connectivity v interconnectivity The assembly has 52 slides, one video clip and outro music. It will last 15-20 minutes, depending on how much audience participation you encourage. It leads from FOMO to encourage JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out) This assembly forms a series of assemblies (10-15 in total- which I will be adding in the near future) designed to build a positive year group identity, and to boost the resilience of the individual students. Freedom City Comics presents snapshots of the history of civil rights and politics on Tyneside. Each chapter focuses on a different era of the history of people and events in Newcastle and the North East. In addition to the free 16-page comic (https://research.ncl.ac.uk/fccomics/readthecomic/), we’ve worked with teachers to make this learning framework for KS2 and KS3. All the activities are designed as springboards for your own projects, lessons, and activities. End of Term Tutor Time / PSHCE

End of Term Tutor Time / PSHCE

A fun and creative Citizenship / Tutor Time project lesson for students in the last week of term. Could be used for activities week in Humanities or just as a reward lesson the last time you see your class for the summer. Very easy to set up - you will just need a few balloons, string, sellotape, old clothes, felt tips and a any other boxes/construction materials you can find (just things that would usually be thrown in the recycling). The students work in small groups to research and recreate a famous political icon (info sheets and clip tasks included - all instructions on Powerpoint). The lesson can last as long as you want it to, and I gave prizes of sweets at the end for the best one - but that’s optional! My students really enjoyed it and we took pictures at the end for the school website. Hopefully yours will love it too. I’m going to be adding lots more free PSHCE lessons over the coming months.
