Jelly Babies Population and Migration Game - Complete Lesson

Jelly Babies Population and Migration Game - Complete Lesson

This interactive and highly engaging lesson set is suitable for KS3 or KS4 students who have been learning about population and migration. The resources include a set of playing cards which have a range of different scenarios linked to changes in a country’s population and causes for migration (longer words are defined/explained in brackets for LA students). Students work in table groups (4-6) and each represent a different country. They take it in turns to draw a card from the deck and must follow the instructions. Each student should begin with a set of jelly babies (I found Asda’s own ‘jelly beans’ to be a suitable substitute as they were much cheaper and vegetarian). Each colour jelly baby represents a different section of the population - therefore students discover how and why a country’s population might change e.g. through natural disasters, lack of opportunities and war. Therefore this activity is suitable for students who have been learning about population structures and/or push and pull factors for migration. The complete lesson pack also contains colourful student worksheets to record their findings and a PowerPoint presentation with clear instructions. The PowerPoint also has instructions for a ‘Think, Pair, Share’ plenary. This lesson was described as “sick” (in a good way) by a number of students!!

Football fashion – who and what will the teams be wearing? One of the first things that comes to mind when football kits are mentioned these days is the staggering amount of money they can generate for football clubs, both from the merchandising side and from the corporate sponsorship side.
