Curators on the Couch, Neville Bonner - Teacher Professional Development

Designed for use by teachers as professional development, this interview unpacks objects which align with content in the Australian Curriculum. Teachers understanding of these objects will be enriched further, preparing them to use the objects in classroom discussions with their students. The first of our series looks at Senator Neville Bonner, our first Indigenous Federal Parliamentarian, and a selection of his personal objects which are currently on display in the Finders Keepers Exhibition at MoAD. MoAD Learning staff interview Senior Historian Libby Stewart and discover some interesting personal stories, showing how an object can reveal but also hide a lot of information. This interview supports the cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. Gettysburg Address ESCAPE ROOM: Translation - Abe Lincoln

Gettysburg Address Escape Room Activity: The Gettysburg Address Escape Room will take students on a secret mission around the classroom! This escape room has students decode interesting facts about the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. This is the perfect resource to introduce a famous historical speech in a fun way! The activity includes modern, easy to understand translations of Lincoln’s speech. The Gettysburg Address Escape Room has students walking around the classroom breaking codes. Students will complete a short formative that corresponds to the readings. This will ensure they are reading the content, not just solving the puzzles. The codes include ciphers, Morse code, cryptograms and a final 4 digit code based on the decoders/clues. Each clue and code is different. The codes require students to think differently to decipher or decode them. Some codes are easier than others. Some codes require critical thinking to determine what a letter/symbol stands for. Each code will reveal interesting facts or an analysis about the Gettysburg Address. The use of secret code will keep your students engaged while competing to find the final code. Students can report the final code to you. If you wanted to, you could purchase a 4 digit lock that you program, but it is not necessary at all! No props needed!! This is a NO PREP, PRINT & GO Activity! The best age range for this resource is 8+. Please look at the preview to determine if this resource works for your age group. Younger students may need some help with some of the more difficult codes. You can use the pre-labeled clues or you can challenge older kids to choose/find the decoder that works for each of the clues. A set of labeled and non-labeled decoders are included for differentiation. A “How to Decode” puzzles is also included. Once your students try one of my escape rooms, they will beg for more! In addition to learning or reinforcing the subject matter, my escape rooms encourage teamwork and critical thinking. As a “timed” challenge, students will be engaged from beginning to end. This escape room includes 12 fun, colorful signs to take class pictures with at the end of the mission. Signs include “Puzzle Master”, “She did all the work”, “Genius”, “We did it”, “I Escaped” and more! Hang the pictures in your room, send them in a parent newsletter or share them on social media  An answer key and easy to follow teacher directions are provided. Time needed: 30-60 minutes New Feature: I have included a 6 question formative to complete as proof of understanding. This thought provocative resource aims to help students assess whether prison sentences work. This is a controversial subject with people from all sides advocating different solutions from longer sentences to rehabilitate prisoners to alternatives stences based in the community. This card sort can be used with a range of abilities and has never failed to get my students excited, engaged, whilst improving their understanding of this difficult topic. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a single page Microsoft Word document which includes a learning objective, instructions, two headings cards labeled ‘Pros / Adavtanges’ and ‘Cons / Disadvatages’ as well as sixteen information cards to be sorted. At the end of the document there is an extension question designed to help consolidate the lesson. This is a fully editable document which can be customised if necessary to suit your students. The Peasants' Revolt 1381 Full Middle Ages Lesson

MIddle Ages - Power and the People What happened when the Peasants Revolted? This lesson was designed to be taught after a full unit on the Medieval Black Death and it’s consequences, but works just as well as a stand-alone lesson. It can be used as a history lesson or even part of a topic on citizenship and taxation. The Peasants’ Revolt 1381 saw the people of the South East of England rise up and attack London and the King’s advisors over unfair taxation (The Poll Tax). The lesson begins with the causes of the Peasants’ Revolt and students must link them together and ‘make the middle box happen’. This is a good thinking activity to help students to develop their reasoning and explaining skills in history. In the middle box is ‘The Peasants’ Revolt’. In the boxes on the outside are reasons why this happened. They could just draw a line from each cause to the middle box - this would be accurate but does not explain how some causes led to other causes. The children have to create a causation web linking the different reasons, in order. On the lines they have drawn they need to explain using ‘so’ or ‘because’ sentences. Students can use the same box as many times as they like for different causes. FOR EXAMPLE: King Richard II was only 10 years old when he came to the throne in 1377, so he had advisors that the people did not like. In 1377 these advisors brought in the Poll Tax and everyone over 15 had to pay the same amount. This made the peasants angry and led to the Peasants’ revolt. The students could also use the boxes differently and consider long term versus short term causes. They web can then be used as a structure to write a full paragraph on the causes of the Peasants’ Revolt. (A P.E.E.L. structure encourages explanation - see my store for a PEEL writing mat resource)

The World War II Escape Room will take students on a secret mission around the classroom! This escape room has students decode interesting facts about World War II. This is the perfect resource to introduce or review FDR, Pearl Harbor, Hitler and the Holocaust. The World War II Escape Room has students walking around the classroom breaking codes. Students are given a secret code name and sent on a secret mission to restore Anne Frank’s Diary. The codes include ciphers, Morse code, cryptograms and a final 4 digit code based on the decoders/clues. Each clue and code is different. The codes require students to think differently to decipher or decode them. Some codes are easier than others. Some codes require critical thinking to determine what a letter/symbol stands for. Each code will reveal interesting facts about World War II. The use of secret code will keep your students engaged while competing to find the final code. Students can report the final code to you. Drop Down Day / Off Timetable Day Pack - A set of 6 lessons to cover a Drop Down Day (6 hours) all about democracy, elections and voting. The Drop Down Day was put together for Year 9 originally, but all the resources are editable and well-differentiated so it could be used with any year group KS4 / KS3 with a tweak or so. The overall theme for the series of KS3 Drop Down Days was ‘British Values’, so this is just one in a series of six which ran throughout the year. The day works especially well if you can align it with voting for the student council or prefects. At the end of the sessions, after carefully studying the democratic process, the students could come down to the hall to cast their vote. There is much focus on British Values throughout the lessons as this was planned to ensure thorough coverage of Citizenship and SMSC. All these individual lessons have been rated very highly by Tes users and are tried and tested in my own department. Globalization and Global Citizenship, collaborative research project unit bundle

Students will learn about globalization and then will be working collaboratively to research one problem affecting the world on a global scale, while simultaneously developing their writing proficiency. Upon completion of their research, groups will develop and execute and action project the support solving a global problem on a local level. Discussion questions are used to open each lesson, and students are to be given time to write out their answers before sharing their answers as a class discussion. A writing rubric is included, which is a student friendly version of the WIDA writing rubric, which measures proficiency in writing in English. A sentence starter is included with each discussion question to support students who are struggling writings, have special needs or are English language learners. Research will require access to a source for gaining information. The unit plan was designed with intention to be used with National Geographic’s Global Issues series. If that is not available to you I have also included a hyperlinked document where students can find the information they need on each global issue.

All about Canada: 13 Webquests (EAL, ESL, and LINC)

Get students engaged by having them use tablets, iPads, or desktops to learn key facts about the Canadian provinces and territories online! These one-page webquests direct students to a Canadian government website in order to answer questions about provinces and territories. Because websites are provincial government websites, you can be sure the information will be accurate, and the website will be around for a long time. The webquests are primarily aimed at English language learners from CLB 1-3, but it could also be used in elementary school classes. They could also be adapted for use at higher levels: while the language is simple, the content is not. Finally, the webquests could be used by newcomers to Canada who are preparing for the Canadian citizenship examination. Each webquest took my class about an hour to complete. For your convenience, answer keys have been provided. Feedback is greatly appreciated.
