Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Trump Cards Template1 Publisher

Trump Cards Template1 Publisher

A trump cards template for Publisher. You will need Microsoft Publisher to access the template. Instructions included in the compressed folder. It contains 1 template (front, back) in 3 different colours: red, blue, green). I’ve attached the pdf conversion, in case you want to encourage the students to become creative. Idea to use the pdf: i. Split the class in 3 groups ii. Make the rules (agree on a topic e.g. superheroes, agree what stats all should use in the 4 columns, what maximum value the stats might have and what class of heroes each group chooses) iii. Print the cards on card paper (1 colour per group) iv. Students should draw one superhero and give them realistic stats. v. Play the game. Enjoy!

Guided Reading KS1

Guided Reading KS1

I use these worksheets during my guided reading sessions with Year 1. We make predictions about the front cover, then half way through, and then just before the end. We then reflect on what we predicted. The skimming task is differentiated. The focus is on phase 2 and 3 tricky words. My children highlighted the words in different highlighter pen as it was clearer for them to count the words at the end.

Phonics Planning Guide: Story Wizard Phonics

Phonics Planning Guide: Story Wizard Phonics

Story Wizard Phonics supports children to become young story writers by: using basic shapes to develop fine motor skills and then combining those shapes to form letters (available in both print and cursive) creating ‘word wands’ to trace newly learned phonemes in the air providing guidance for pronunciation including mouth positions and patterns for short and stretched sounds organising phonemes into words (and writing them themselves) discussing the meanings and usage of every word they learn (including exception words) The emphasis is on helping children to understand the shapes, sounds, meanings and usage of the symbols they learn towards becoming word wizards! Every new phoneme is introduced in the context of a word using only phonemes that have been previously taught. This helps children to continuously consolidate their prior learning while also recognising the relationship between sounds, letters and words. Children are encouraged to begin writing sentences with words they have learned and can use these to create their first story book. This planning guide provides an overview of the available resources and how they can be organised across the full academic year including: 14 weeks of expected phonemes (including baseline assessments and monitoring) 12 weeks of consolidation activities (including further monitoring) 10 weeks of advanced phonemes (including additional monitoring) Monitoring and assessment including individual and class tracking Story Wizard Phonics resources are available here.
