WHY DIDN'T BURKE AND WILLS REACH THE GULF OF CARPENTARIA?

WHY DIDN'T BURKE AND WILLS REACH THE GULF OF CARPENTARIA?

In the early 1860’s the colonies of Victoria and South Australia were involved in a race to see which one would become the first to finance an exploration team to cross the continent from the southern ocean to the northern shores. Such expeditions would take explorers through the unknown arid interior and on to the savanna lands of the tropics. The Victorian expedition, led by Burke and Wills, was lavishly funded and well resources. It left months earlier than the South Australian expedition team led by Stuart. Residents in each of the colonial capitals waited for news of progress and hopefully achievement. Both expeditions faced considerable hardship. The Burke and Wills expedition gained more interest, probably due to the disasters encountered on the return journey south; the events of the dig tree and the death of Burke and Wills. Stuart, although badly affected by the journey returned to Adelaide without losing any of his party of seven. In terms of dates the Burke and Wills group reached the northern areas before Stuart but the debate developed about the technical issue of actually standing on the northern beaches. Stuart managed this but Burke and Wills, for various reasons, did not. This is a piece of Australian colonial history which answers the question. The debate about who can claim the “first crossing” continues. Take your students to camp 119, Burke and Wills most northerly camp where they will find some answers. A question and research page is provided as an attachment. Reference to the unit on Stuart is provided if you wish to delve further into Australian colonial history.

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

These 8 lively, colourful pictures offer inspiration for story-writing, poetry-crafting, newspaper report inventing, and enhancement of the topics they reflect, which include: wild woods, migrating birds, ocean, sunset, jungle, wild animals (British and tropical), dragons, magic carpet rides, transport, myths and more. NB: I sketched and coloured the pictures by hand, adjusting them slightly with basic computer software, so expect spontaneity rather than professional artwork or machine neatness. I use them for all primary classes.

Experiments in Crime Questions and Answers

Experiments in Crime Questions and Answers

Crime is a multi-billion-dollar business. Crime is also deeply embedded in our social, economic, political, religious and material worlds. But, surely it is wrong that, day after day, year after year, thousands of decisions are taken, millions of lives are disturbed and billions of dollars are being spent without robust evidence as to what is the best course of action for those involved in, affected by, or afflicted through crime. Experiments seek to offer hope, they seek to offer help and they seek to assist in making this world, our world, your world, a better place. Fully loaded with questions and examples from across the world, with 27 sections, 44 tables and diagrams, 203 references and 246 pages, this book aims to:  share rich contemporary examples of experiments in crime that you can read, discuss, learn from, relate to and find out more about  give you insight and inspiration with respect to experiments in crime  introduce the language, terms, tips and traps of experiments in crime  empower you to become more confident, capable and curious about experiments in crime  inspire you to ask questions of experiments in crime and of the evidence they produce  encourage you to look at experimental and non experimental evidence  encourage you to look at real life data and how you can use it to help support and challenge experiments in crime  make you do something: think, talk, listen then act.

Craftivism: Climate Coalition Heart Badge

Craftivism: Climate Coalition Heart Badge

Award winning activist Sarah Corbett founded the Craftivist Collective in 2009 to create a community and resources that use craft as a tool for effective and gentle activism. A lifelong campaigner, Sarah became doubtful of traditional activism methods and wondered if we couldn’t use craft to protest in a gentler, more beautiful way. Sarah says: “Politicians and businesses take note when we stand up for what we believe: craftivism gifts for influential people can encourage them to be the change they wish to see in the world. The time and thought that goes into craftivism pieces shows genuine care and commitment. Handmade, unusual campaigns using craft attract media attention, give people who are nervous of activism the chance to join in and intrigue passers-by.

Around the World Summer Camp- DAY 1 (Geography, KS2 KS3, EFL)

Around the World Summer Camp- DAY 1 (Geography, KS2 KS3, EFL)

This was originally taught to Korean Middle School EFL students for a fun art and craft/cooking camp however it is written entirely in English. The aim of this summer camp is for the students to have fun and to learn about different countries and cultures around the world. Each day will focus on a different country and we will learn some facts, look at famous places, food and do an art and craft activity associated with the country. At the start of each day students will guess the country. When I reveal the flag they must copy it onto their ‘passport’ sheet. If students behave well or win a task they receive a sticker on their passport. The student with the most stickers at the end of the camp will win a prize. Day 1: Introduce the summer camp and different monuments and buildings around the world. Today focuses on lots of games and team building activities so that everyone gets to know each other.  Activity 1: Icebreaker Students are given a ‘passport worksheet where they write their name, age, favorite food, favorite place in Korea and three places they would like to visit in the future. They should complete this quite quickly 5-10 minutes. When everyone has finished I pass the ball and when they catch it the student must say something about themselves and introduce themselves to the rest of the class.  Team game (1): Guess where it is from Students look at the famous buildings/monuments from around the world. In teams they must guess which country they think it is from. The team with the most correct will win travel stickers in their passport.  Team game (2): Build a tower In teams students have 30minutes to build a monument/tower using only dried spaghetti, peppero sticks and marshmallows. They have to work together as a team and at the end they can win points based on how tall, how wide and how unique their building is. The winning team gains stickers for their passport.  Lunch Students are given cooked sausage, cucumbers, crackers and cube cheese. Individually on their plate they have to cut slices and try to build the tallest tower. The person with the tallest ‘tower’ wins a sticker for their passport. They can then eat these and the snacks from earlier for lunch.  Team game (3): Jenga race In teams students take it in turns to race forwards and take a block out of the jenga tower. They must then run back to their team and try to build another structure. The team with the tallest structure at the end (whose original building hasn’t fallen over!) are the winners and gain stickers for their passports.  Art and Crafts Using clay, students must make a small keyring or magnet in the shape of a famous building or monument from the lesson. Seoul Tower, Eiffel Tower, Pyramid, Big Ben etc.

Country Flags sheet of keywords on the theme of ‘US State Flags’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

The World News Crossword - July 15th, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 15th, 2018

In this week’s puzzles… (1) A crossword based on events in last week’s news. A search & cloze puzzle detailing Part 2 of the amazing rescue of the 12 boys and their football coach from the flooded cave in northern Thailand, A crossword about NATO, and there are no clues, and A crossword all about Belgium (which achieved 3rd place in the FIFA World Cup). In last week’s news… All twelve boys from the Wild Boars football team and their coach who were trapped in a cave in northern Thailand were rescued. The US president said NATO member countries aren’t contributing enough to NATO (even though countries don’t contribute anything). Britain’s Foreign Minister resigned because he didn’t like the state of Brexit negotiations. Nestlé products are banned from zoos in Melbourne and a man has taken Monsanto to court alleging its weed killer caused his cancer. George Clooney fell off his motor bike while in Sardinia. Justin Bieber got engaged, maybe. An American tourist shut down Vienna airport because of a live artillery shell in her luggage. Scorpions invaded Brazilian cities, sort of. And after 66 years, an Indian man finally cut his finger nails. Angelique Kerber and Novak Đoković won the Women’s and Men’s Singles at Wimbledon. France won the FIFA World Cup, but the most loved and most successful football team during the World Cup was The Wild Boars of Thailand.

The World News Crossword - July 8th, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 8th, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 8th, 2018 is a 6-page PDF that includes: a crossword based on events from last week’s news, a search & cloze puzzle that focuses on the background of one of last week’s stories (this week it’s the background story of the boys who have been trapped in the cave system in northern Thailand), a crossword about Thailand, and a crossword about Thailand’s neighbour and frequent subject of news stories, Myanmar. This resource is excellent for keeping students informed about the world’s current events. It takes about half an hour for students to complete the main crossword and the rest of a lesson to review (and discuss) the answers. It’s good for use in homeroom or PSHE lessons, or it’s excellent for a homework activity. I prefer to use the news puzzle as a small-group activity. The students then tend to discuss the events more, asking why and wanting to know more about many of the stories. So what happened last week? The Thai footballers and their coach, trapped in a flooded cave system dominated my week. I was checking my phone frequently, waiting for updates and imagining how I wold cope in that situation. A dive boat capsized off Phuket in Thailand and tourists were drowned. Flooding in Japan resulted in deaths and mass evacuations. A wildfire in California also resulted in evacuations. Police in the USA challenged the suitability of 2 novels on a high-school’s reading list. An American woman was attacked on social media for killing an elderly giraffe in South Africa. And 2 rhino poachers were eaten by lions, also in South Africa. And in Queensland, Australia, a possum was rescued by the RSPCA from a Nutella jar. Yes, really.

The World News Crossword - July 1st, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 1st, 2018

The World News Crossword is a downloadable PDF. It’s quick and simple to download, save onto a flash drive, and rint from when the time’s right. This week’s PDF contains: (1) A crossword based on the events of last week’s news, (2) A search and cloze puzzle based on modern day slavery in India (3) A crossword about India’s geography, and (4) A crossword from the soon-to-be-released book ‘Women who changed the world’ - a puzzle all about Indira Ghandi, India’s third Prime Minister. From last week’s news… Germany was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup. Prince William visited Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. New Guinea reported its first case of polio in 30 years. Turkey re-elected its President. Harley Davidson said it would move some production out of the US because of the tariffs imposed on imported steel. Canada imposed tariffs on US-made ketchup in response to US tariffs on Canadian-made steel. Samoa and Mumbai banned single-use plastic bags, cups, food containers, and drinking straws. India’s interior minister waa attacked on social media for receiving a kidney transplant from a Muslim. About 50 people were killed when a bus went off a mountain road in northern India. 12 Thai boys and their football coach were trapped in a flooded cave system for 9 days before being found by an international team of rescue personnel. It’s good to know about these things. It’s even better to discuss why these things happen and what may happen next - because it’s good for us to discuss what happens in the rest of the world and how it may affect us as well as how what we do might affect others.
