IB DP Environmental Systems & Societies - Topic 5.1 Measuring Abiotic Soil Properties

IB DP Environmental Systems & Societies - Topic 5.1 Measuring Abiotic Soil Properties

Lab activity Students are introduced to 3 different methods to classify soils and determine their moisture and organic (carbon) content. Soil classification uses the gravimetric method of placing soil samples in glass gas flasks or graduated cylinders with water, shaking it well and letting the particles fall out of suspension and determine boundaries between sand, silt and clay. These then are plotted on tri-linear soil classification diagrams. Soil and organic (carbon) content are determined similarly in that the percent difference between wet - dry and with - without carbon can be determined. Document contains a description of these 3 methods and includes tri-linear soil classification diagram.

Draws graphs of y=mx+c, Quadratic or Cubic Curves according to user-defined values using Excel.

Draws graphs of y=mx+c, Quadratic or Cubic Curves according to user-defined values using Excel.

Can be used to visually show graphs for KS3, KS4 and KS5, mainly maths but potential applications with other graph drawing subjects. Can draw straight lines (y=mx+c), quadratic (y=ax2+bx+c) and cubic (ax3 +bx2+cx+d) functions. Visually allows teachers to demonstrate in real time how altering any of the coefficients in the equations affects the shape of the line or curve. Useful for KS3 to demonstrate alteration of gradient and y-intercept, KS4 to demonstrate the shape of quadratic functions & KS5 for cubic functions.

Classification hierarchy

Classification hierarchy

An engaging lesson presentation (34 slides) and associated worksheets that introduces students to classification using the taxonomic levels and teaches them how to name species using the binomial naming system. The students are told about the domain system, as developed by Carl Woese, but then the lesson focuses on showing them the seven levels that come after this. Students are challenged to understand how the levels differ from each other in terms of sharing characteristics. Time is taken to focus on the five kingdoms and links are made to other topics such as prokaryotic cells to test their previous knowledge. Moving forwards, students are shown how the genus and species are used in the binomial naming system before being given lots of opportunities to assess their understanding through questions. This lesson has been written for GCSE students but is suitable for all age ranges

Scientists Questions on Small Creatures

Scientists Questions on Small Creatures

This presentation is a free sample part of a series designed to be used as a starter or plenary in Science lesson. The series of presentations use a consistent format and cover a range of topics which are part of a KS2/3 science curriculum. In each task students are presented with a science based question and are given 6 potential responses. Of these 6 responses 5 are incorrect and 1 is correct. Pupils are challenged to use knowledge and reasoning to identify the correct response. Each presentation contains 12 tasks with hyperlinks embedded throughout. A paper based slide will allow questions to be set as a homework task or provide meaningful work for a cover lesson

AQA GCSE Biology Topic 2Organisation Flash Cards

AQA GCSE Biology Topic 2Organisation Flash Cards

Over 60 flash cards with questions and answers. Questions have been made based on common questions students get wrong and include working scientifically questions and maths questions. The last page has 6 bonus MCQ flash cards which test understanding of other questions within the flash card pack. These flash cards could be given to students after they have completed topic two or saved for in year 11 when hard core revision begins! Alternatively, I made the flash cards on PPT as I often copy one of the slides over and have my students complete the questions on it as a settler in order to interleave content. The slides have been made in PPT and are fully editable. Print using the 'Print on both sides. Print on long edge' option under print settings. Please leave a review with any comments or suggestions:)

New AQA B5.13 (New Biology GCSE spec 4.5 - exams 2018) – negative feedback (HT only)

AQA B5 (New GCSE Spec – Unit 4.5 – Homeostasis and response) Lesson: B5.13 – Negative feedback Specification points covered = 4.5.3.7 - Negative feedback (HT only) A lesson about negative feedback to be used when teaching the new physics specification GCSE of AQA B5 (Paper 2, Topic 1 - Homeostasis and response). The content of this lesson was included in with the role of insulin and glucagon when doing the lesson on blood glucose concentration. This is reflected in the cost of this resource, as it more just has the information the students need to know with only a couple of very simple tasks to be completed.
