A-level Stats & Mechanics Treasure Hunt

This resource is useful to revise a few of the key concepts and topics that come up in the new, year 1, A-level, Edexcel maths curriculum. Place the sheets around a room/area and the students need to answer the questions in the centre of the sheet to then find the answer on another sheet at the top. Get them to write down the sheet numbers that one answer links to the next until they complete the loop. You can use various systems, be it an individual hunt (if you have a small class) or small groups. I found it takes around 40 minutes or so, depending on the space you use and the ability of students.

A mini-whiteboard activity where students are asked to draw several force diagrams for a single situation involving connected particles (in this case, a man in a lift). It is something my students have struggled with in the past, and I couldn’t find much else online, so I created this so that students can become more confident with this topic. Contains a similar MWB quiz for pulleys. Both resources worked really well as revision/consolidation tools.

Toppling and sliding (Mechanics 2) - brief notes, examples and an exercise

I created this short worksheet to revise the principles and basic methods for determining whether an object on an inclined plane will slide, topple, or neither. It may also be suitable as an introduction to the topic. So that the focus of the worksheet is on deciding what happens to the object, rather than spending time finding the location of the centre of mass, I have used only solid cylinders and cones for the questions. There is an introductory page which explains the required methods, together with a couple of examples. The exercise contains 20 questions, answers are included.

Using the ‘real-life’ science of BLOODHOUND SSC a rocket and jet car capable of travelling 1,000mph, we describe what the sound barrier is, show a video of our current land speed record car, Thrust SSC, breaking the sound barrier. we show how sound waves travel, how we measure speed, and plan an investigation using balloons, tape measure/ trundle wheel and stopwatches to investigate and calculate the speed of sound. **KS3: Curriculum links: ** Ask questions and develop a line of enquiry based on observations of the real world, alongside prior knowledge and experience.
