#### Multiplicative Counting (GCSE 9-1)

I pushed my Year 11 set one a little bit to try some of the harder GCSE 9-1 questions on this topic where they needed to decide whether they were permutations or combinations &amp; needed to be divided by 2 (very basic with only 2 variables). They at no time use combinations - we just extended the counting principle for different 'choices'. They struggled to know when to divide when reading the question so I made some new ones up for additional practice. These are a mixture of general counting principle, combinations &amp; permutations. Answers included. Please let me know if any of them need fixing/changing for clarity.

Statistics 1 Revision Lesson - Mixture of Questions that all lead to opening a coded lock. Topics include Standard Deviation, Stem and Leaf, Expectation and Variance, Permutations, Venn Diagrams. #### How to calculate the number of Enigma machine settings explaining combinations and permutations.

This is an 8 page booklet which takes the pupils through the maths of calculating the number of ways an Enigma machine can be set up, using both permutations (the order of the rotors does matter) and combinations, where the order in which the plug board is set up doesn't matter. The first two pages lead the pupils through the various calculations leading to the answer of approximately 158 million billion ways or 158,962,555,217,826,360,000 ways to be precise! The remaining six pages explain the difference between permutations and combinations.

#### Statistics: Probability 5 - Tree Diagrams (+ worksheets)

This is a whole lesson on tree diagrams, but there is probably (pun intended) enough material for two lessons (with and without replacement)... the lesson comes with a starter, learning objectives, keywords, excellent examples of replacement and non-replacement and one example of conditional probability, questions with answers and plenary. Even though this lesson is aimed at higher tier pupils at GCSE, there is a couple of A-Level questions included with answers, so that I can use the same material for my A-Level S1 Statistics classes. This is a whole lesson (30 sides) doing an investigation, which is fun and to self-discover what the binomial distribution is and introduces the whole topic. It also looks at the notation involved and putting the formula into a general form. This is a fantastic foundation for the next lesson. The Riemann Zeta Club is an enrichment maths club for Lower Sixth Formers, aimed as preparation for the Maths Challenge, Maths Olympiad and Oxbridge entry.
