Planetary investigation - data analysis

Includes data/information (e.g. oxygen levels, temperature, amount of vegetation/water, predators, gravity) on 6 imaginary planets - and Earth. Info on Earth is roughly accurate. This info is presented in the form of a table and as a range of graphs (e.g. pie/bar charts). Aim of lesson is to first work out which graphs represent which planet. Children can then decided whether a planet is inhabitable (by comparing it to Earth's data). (Includes brief lesson plan).

Candy Lab Introduction to the Scientific Process and What Scientists Do

Understanding the scientific process can be tough for kids without plenty of hands-on experience. This candy lab investigation is designed to help them explore what scientists do, the tools they use, and the scientific process. This resource includes a 10-page booklet for students to record their observations, data, and conclusions, plus teacher instructions for completing the lab. The lab includes experiences in: • observing physical properties • classifying • recording data in a bar graph • predicting • variables • using a hand lens, graduated cylinder, thermometer, and clock • drawing conclusions • sharing data • recording data in a line plot The teacher will need to provide the above mentioned tools and individual candies (such as Skittles, M&Ms, Tootsie Rolls, etc.).

Literacy support for investigation/experiement write-ups.

This resource can be used as: 1. a display 2. an inclusion in an exercise book 3. a resource to collect from a folder when needed - cut out triangles (laminate if time), hole punch through the tops and tag them together. Upper and lower ability versions included. Four triangles holding prompts/suggestions for: Vocabulary Connectives Openers Punctuation Pupils can use them independently or teacher can highlight to the whole class using the PPT, which terms/punctuation should be used. If stuck in exercise books, pupils can tick off the terms/punctuation they have used. If one area say, connectives is an issue, then only that triangle need be glued in books.
