KS1 Talk4Writing:The Christmas Story. Planning & Resources for Four Week Scheme of Work

This resource uses Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’. Although this resource uses the story of The Christmas Story, the resources and activities can be easily transferred to another story. Planning can also be used as a skeleton plan. Please note that the characters and places remained the same as we used this as our nativity! It is an excellent opportunity to include children that suffer with hearing loss. It includes: • Four weeks of plans - three sessions each week, could be three if you had four or more sessions a week (imitation, adapation and independent application - each with Lower Ability, Middle Ability and Higher Ability objectives). • Powerpoint of using Pie Corbett’s style of retelling (openers, connectives and language all fit in with actions) • Resources for each session - Story mountain activity sheets and IWB resource Never Heard the Word Activity Adjectives activity Labels to stick in Literacy books with objectives and recount of activity for each activity. • Time opener actions

The Race to Bethlehem! A Christmas Musical for EYFS/KS1

The Race to Bethlehem! A Christmas Musical for EYFS/KS1

The Race to Bethlehem is a heart-warming version of the Christmas story for younger children (ages 4 to 8) to perform. In the story we meet Farmer Dan’s pigeons and Fluff, a little pigeon who prefers walking to flying. Every year, the village farmers hold a race to Bethlehem for the pigeons and Fluff is determined to get there. On the way he meets Joseph and Mary, who are on their way to Bethlehem too… The Race to Bethlehem story is written simply for young children to learn easily. The 7 original songs are catchy and fun to sing, easy to learn and remember. In addition there are two well-known songs – Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (with an additional verse) and Away in a Manger. The script includes stage directions to help with your performance. I hope the children, their teachers and parents enjoy the story of Fluff’s journey to Bethlehem and his encounter with the Nativity story!

10 Minute Bullying Play, Primary school Stage Playscript.

**** STAGE PLAY VERSION **** This is a tried and tested Script, created for a after-school drama club. It was performed by a mixture of Lower and Upper KS2 children. It would be perfect for a Drama Club or PSHE project. It also highlights ‘first days’ and transition along with sibling and peer relationships. It has an appropriate ending to promote ‘doing the right thing’ and forgiveness I give permission for the names and genders to be changed to suit the group performing. Christmas play 'When the 3 kings got lost'.

Christmas play 'When the 3 kings got lost'.

I wrote this play based on the nativity story - based mostly on the 3 kings who get lost trying to find where baby Jesus is being born. I used lots of local references - to the local hospital, a nearby toll bridge and a local hotel / castle - but it should be easy to substitute in local landmarks near you. It has 21 speaking parts, suitable for KS2 and Y2 children) and as many parts for ‘farm animals’ as you want (non-speaking parts). There are places suggested for 6 songs, there are some suggested songs but you could put in any songs of your choice. We performed this to the parents at Christmas a few years ago and they loved all the local references, it went down very well.

Nativity play for KS2 written as TV Evening News

Nativity play for KS2 written as TV Evening News

I wrote this play for our whole school, we are in a small village primary school but it could be easily adapted for a KS2 class. It has 7 suggested songs (carols such as ‘O Little town of Bethlehem’ and ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ ) but these can be deleted or substituted as required. There are 26 parts, 4 of which are non-speaking parts. It only requires very simple props. It tells the story of the nativity but through an evening TV news report. I’ve left spaces to substitute in the name of your school and the names of the different reporters with the children’s names.

play based on 'Around the World in 80 Days'

play based on 'Around the World in 80 Days'

I wrote this adaptation of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ for our Christmas play but it could be used at any time of year. The main characters visit ‘different countries’ which offers lots of opportunities for children to do songs and dances from different places, I’ve used a French song, an American line dancing scene and others - but they could be adapted to whatever skills/ strengths your children have. There’s around 19 speaking parts and also lots of opportunities for singing and dancing for various groups of children. I use it as a whole school play in our very small village primary school but it could easily be adapted for a KS2 class.

I wrote this adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' for our Christmas play.

I wrote this adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' for our Christmas play.

I wrote this adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’ as a whole school Christmas play for our very small village primary school, it was very popular with the parents. It has roughly 30 parts - but some can be ‘doubled-up’ if needed. There’s also a suggestion for KS1 children to perform a song and dance at one point but this can also be adapted if needed. There’s suggestions for songs at different stages in the play but these can be dropped/ substituted as required. I usually ask KS2 children to take the speaking parts, there’s a main character (Scrooge) and most of the other characters have roughly 2-6 lines to learn. This could easily be adapted for a class Christmas play, probably Year 2 upwards.

Christmas play The Never-ending Winter

Christmas play The Never-ending Winter

I wrote this Christmas play based on a folk tale, it has 34 parts (but some could be doubled - up if needed) and it contains suggestions for songs to sing a different parts of the play but these can be dropped / substituted as you wish. The main character has 15 lines and most characters have around 2 - 6 lines, there are also a few non-speaking parts. The narration of the story is told in rhyme and there’s the option of a child singing a solo, if wanted. The props are minimal and easy - just spades for the villagers and a throne (decorated chair) for Father Time and the costumes should be fairly easy - I usually ask narrators to dress in plain dark clothes and there’s a Wicked Winter Witch who has one costume change (into a sparkly gown and wearing a crown). I will use it for the whole school (we’re in a very small village school) with KS2 taking the speaking parts and I’ve put in an option for KS1 children to do a song & dance part way through - but it could easily be adapted to use with a class, probably Y2 upwards.

The Greatest Showman 10 minute medley

The Greatest Showman 10 minute medley

This is a 10 minute medley that I have edited and produced. It would be great for a school performance or an assembly activity. The songs included (in order) are: The greatest show, Million Dreams, This is Me and Come Alive. There are 3 files to this resource: The Song Sheet the lyrics are in two colours, Black for solo singing parts that can be split to suit your group and Blue for the ensemble parts. The Medley MP3 This is a medley arranged by myself, it is a backing track but the original singers remain for the ensemble parts just to give the kids a bit of help. The Medley with singing MP3 I have recorded the song with vocals to show where the solo parts come in. I performed this medley with KS1 and Lower KS2 children. I split the solo parts into 3-4 lines each child, either alone or in little groups. They had no trouble learning their parts and the added ensemble vocals gave the volume needed for the big chorus parts. Please leave a review and happy singing!

Circus Assembly for Key Stage One

Circus Assembly for Key Stage One Cast of 30 - easily adaptable up or down. Role of Narrator taken by Class Teacher. Duration: 10 - 15 minutes This script is suitable for both upper and lower Key Stage I. Whereas the first half is on the history of circuses, there are lots of jokes to cheer up our Sad Clown for younger children in the second half - plus ample opportunities for ‘the performance of a lifetime’! This script is a kind of template - it can be used for any size class and be expanded to any length of time. Oh, and did I mention Health and Safety?! Sample Text: Fire breather: Look at what fire breathers do! (Fire breather breathes out fire) (Everyone gasps and applauds; Narrator rushes on with fire extinguisher) Narrator: Hey! Health and safety! Health and safety! Stop this now! Sword swallower: And then there’s my act (holding up sword) Narrator: (Intervening quickly) I have no idea what you intend doing with that sword – but not here, not now! Sword swallower: But I was only going to swallow it (pauses) like this! Narrator: (Shrieking) Stop now! That’s way too dangerous! (Whole cast groans) Sad Clown: You see? Always some health and safety spoilsport around these days to ruin our fun! (Circus juggler walks up and down, juggling) Narrator: Now, that’s more like it! Plenty of skill, no danger! (Stilt walker walks up and down) Narrator: (Applauding) Bravo! (Contortionist and ‘Strong man’ perform, Narrator watching anxiously) (Everyone gasps and applauds; Narrator rushes on with First Aid Kit) Narrator: This really won’t do! What have I said about health and safety? (Lion roars loudly)

Pet Care Assembly for Key Stage I

Pet Care Assembly for Key Stage I

Pet Care Assembly for Key Stage I This script is a totally moveable feast! The cast consists of Narrator (Class Teacher) plus 30 pets - the number and type of pets can, of course, be changed to match any class requirement. Although it is full of humorous moments, the message behind it is a serious one - that of taking the business of pet care itself seriously. The length of this performance is around 10 - 15 minutes *plus - allowing for ‘parade’ and ‘additions’ from children themselves i.e. information about their particular pets. It could potentially be double this length depending on how much additional information and suggested poetry is included. Great fun. Would love to see this performed! Sample Text: Narrator: You see, pets do take a lot of looking after. They are a big responsibility! (Pauses) What do you think is the most important part of looking after a pet? Child 4: Making it happy? Narrator: Correct! Child 5: And healthy! Narrator: Well done! So, you have to do a lot of homework before you even choose a pet. Child 6: Sounds like being at school! Child 7: Having a pet is meant to be fun! Narrator: But it’s no fun for your pet if it’s not looked after properly. Take that Great Dane, for example. (‘Great Dane’ stands up) Child 8: He’d take a lot of feeding! Narrator: Correct! Big dogs like big meals! But that’s not all! Child 9: He’ll need a lot of exercise! Child 10: Long walks! Narrator: Two or three times a day! He won’t want to be left inside by himself all day! (Great Dane shakes his head in agreement and sits down) Narrator: Animals have needs, just like us! And we need to respect their needs! Maybe someone could share with us, how they look after their pet? Child 11: I have two guinea pigs called Bill and Ben! Narrator: Two guinea pigs? Child 11: Yes, they like company! Narrator: And where do you keep them? Child 11: In a hutch with a nice grassy run. They also have cardboard boxes and pipes to hide in if they get frightened.
