Crooked Stars Tessellation Investigation

Crooked Stars Tessellation Investigation

A great competition based lesson to encourage creativity with tessellations. The fully animated PowerPoint introduces the concept of tessellation while getting students to work as a team to find as many unique tessellations as possible. The file includes a set of blind instructions for drawing the crooked star - which always produces some great results - and animated slides to get across what the students are trying to achieve. This lesson can comfortably run for 1-2 lessons as a team competition. Also included are printable crooked star templates drawn on a 1 cm grid, to support those students struggling with drawing the star, or those wanting to use mirrored stars more easily. Good luck and enjoy! P.S. Please leave feedback with how many unique shapes your classes have found.

Mr Cube 3D Identification ID Game Fact Sheet Poster Volume Surface Area Worksheet Activity

Mr Cube 3D Identification ID Game Fact Sheet Poster Volume Surface Area Worksheet Activity

Mr Cube walks into the classroom. How do you know it is Mr Cube? Well it looks like Mr Cube! How do you know what Mr Cube looks like? Ask him some questions like "How many faces have you got?" PowerPoint starts you off and gives the class a warm up with you asking questions. Then use the worksheet and check their answers against the answer sheet. You can see where you go with this! I always play this as a class game where one student goes out of the room and you give him/her a name of a 3D. They then come back in and the class can ask them questions which only have the answer "Yes" or "No." The classmates have to guess which shape he/she is. Once you've shown everyone how to play it then get them to play it in pairs or tables of four...Hours of fun :) You can use the enclosed List of 3D shapes cards to help with this - two versions for easier and harder. Check out Resource 1565 "3D Shape Word Mat" on Displays.tpet.co.uk for some great pictures on a place mat. Also check out fun video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNZF-3xnitk "What Shape Is It? 2: 3D Shapes - Learn Geometric Shapes - The Kids' Picture Show (Fun & Educational)" If you like this then please check out my many other Maths activities listed on my TES Resources shop and pages including many Premium resources which may be able to save you lots of time and give you some useful ideas. If you find this helpful then please do leave a constructive review so that others can benefit from your experience. Thank you.
