Expanding Brackets and Collecting Like Terms

Students learn how to find the sum and difference of two algebraic expressions by expanding brackets. Learning progresses from working with linear to non-linear terms and writing the area of composite shapes as simplified algebraic expressions. The start of the lesson recaps factorising and expanding a single bracket. The plenary challenges students to write the area of a composite shape as a simplified algebraic expression. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to simplify the sum of two brackets with linear terms. Most students should be able to find the sum and difference of two or more brackets. Some students should be able to find the sum and difference of two or more brackets with non-linear terms.

Form and Solve Quadratic Equations

Students learn how to form and solve quadratic equations from geometry problems. Problems include finding the area of a rectangle with algebraic lengths to setting up an equation from similar shapes. The start of the lesson recaps finding the area of composite shapes with algebraic lengths as this is needed throughout the lesson. The plenary challenges students to derive and solve a quadratic equation from the surface area of a cuboid. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to form a quadratic equation from a rectilinear area. Most students should be able to use geometrical facts to set up and solve a quadratic equation when a = 1. Some students should be able to form and solve a quadratic equation from geometrical facts.

One-step Equations (Treasure Hunt)

This activity gives students a break from the text-books/worksheets while still helping them to to grips with simple equations. Targeted at upper-primary, but the loop cards are great for weaker secondary students. They are a really great way to get students to answer questions quickly and enjoy doing so. These question cards have been prepared in two sizes. The large cards can be pinned around around the classroom and used for a whole class activity; the smaller (loop cards) can be used for group work or by individuals – they are particularly helpful for one-to-one tutorials and during interventions.

Students learn how to enlarge shapes objects on a grid using a centre and scale factor. Learning progresses from enlarging shapes to a positive scale factor to fractional scale factors. More able students are challenged to describe as well as perform enlargements by finding the centre and scale factor. The start of the lesson recaps describing translations using vectors. At the end of the lesson students are challenged to perform and describe enlargements on an isometric grid. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to enlarge an object using a positive integer scale factor and centre. Most students should be able to perform and describe an enlargement to a positive integer scale factor and centre.
