Students watch a short film, "Making it in America," by Joris Debeij, about a single mother and Salvadoran immigrant struggling to realize her goals in America. In this lesson, students learn about the sacrifices many immigrants make as they transition to lives in the United States and the perseverance needed to succeed. Students explore the concepts of, "The American Dream," and, "Land of Opportunity," in relation to the immigrant experience as well as to their own lives. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story. English and Spanish versions of the lesson plan are available for download.

This bundle contains a variety of teaching and learning resources on refugees and asylum seekers. It is an ideal resource for Refugee Week which takes place from 19th to 25th June in 2017 and Refugee Day which is held on 20th June each year. The contents include Lesson / Assembly PowerPoint Presentation A fully editable and informative PowerPoint lesson/assembly presentation on Refugee Week / Refugee Day, with a focus on the Syrian War and refugees. The PowerPoint contains hyperlinks to a video about the Syrian War and a poignant video and poem recital by a teenage asylum seeker. Simulation Activity Pack and Worksheets This activity pack contains an editable lesson plan. The simulation activity is in the form of a PowerPoint and there are follow-up activities that include questions for discussion and three evaluation and review worksheets. The simulation has 8 scenarios. Groups of pupils are required to make decisions/take actions.
