My star is... 3 graded versions of a Star Picture-Poem Frame Early Yrs, Yr 1, Yr 2.

My star is... 3 graded versions of a Star Picture-Poem Frame Early Yrs, Yr 1, Yr 2.

These attractive star pictures are fun to write in, and there are plenty of straight lines to write on - shooting in all directions. The variations are graded in difficulty, with increasing opportunities for words and similes, the hardest having three descriptive lines to complete below, about stars, sky and space. Colouring possibilities are wide open. Recommended approach: first, in a wide space, ‘be’ stars with your group, pointing, shooting, whirling, glowing, winking, blinking, dancing, spinning. Then prompt for verbs like these, and adjectives, such as spiky, sharp, peaceful, gentle, high up, twinkly, pretty, delicate, dainty, tiny - and different colours. The similes are for sparkly stars and dark space. The 3-sheet resource has been used with rewarding results in my workshops. They are hand-drawn and home-produced, so don’t expect perfect symmetry!

Copernicus - A sample chapter from 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'

Copernicus - A sample chapter from 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'

This is a sample chapter from the forthcoming book, ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ by Tom Burkard and Colin McKenzie. Copernicus was a pioneer of astronomy whose work was crucial to the replacement of the ‘goecentric model’ of the Universe with a ‘heliocentric’ model. This chapter is aimed at higher ability 11-16 students and has been found to be an excellent resource for revision, homework or ‘flipped learning’. Further chapters are also being made available for review and evaluation. This chapter tells the story of Copernicus’ life in the context of his times. It details his work on astronomy and describes the cultural implications of his discoveries. Explanations are provided that enable to understand how observations of planetary movements provide evidence for the different models of the solar system. Each chapter of SotSoG gives a brief biography of a great physicist and is linked to an explanation of their discoveries that is relevant to the school curriculum. This is a trial chapter and we welcome feedback from teachers and students before publication of the finished book. I have used chapters for revision, homework and as ‘flipped learning’ activities, where students are encouraged to independently learn the basics of a topic before it is taught in class. Our chapters are also very effective for use in ‘quiet reading’ sessions. The literacy level here is ‘middle to high’ and we have found this content to be very engaging as extension work for higher ability students.

This however required a lot of material and the unwelcomed task of lugging them all home with you to mark. But we used them because they were effective and allowed us to effectively assess our students understanding. NOW: Why use digital interactive notebooks? As prices decrease, many schools are moving towards a 1:1, computer-student ratio and are becoming digital, the way we teach needs to keep up. You don’t even need a class set of computer, a personal device (cell phone, laptop, tablet, etc. will work just as well).

The majority of the items in this resource are fully editable. In addition, slides can be added or removed easily to suit your classroom needs. This Digital Interactive Notebook is broken down into 9 chapters. Chapters can easily be removed if they don’t correspond to your curriculum needs. The following chapters are included with your purchase. • Chapter 1 - Space - An Introduction • Chapter 2 - Our Solar System • Chapter 3 - The Life and Death of Stars • Chapter 4 - The Seasons and Earth’s Tilt • Chapter 5 - The Moon • Chapter 6 - Eclipse - Solar and Lunar • Chapter 7 - Galaxies, Other Objects, and the Universe • Chapter 8 - The Immensity of the Universe • Chapter 9 - Life in outer space - how humans meet their needs THEN: Before computers, we used interactive notebooks to engage our students and keep their notebooks organized and accessible.
