HISTORY MYSTERY: Why did the Great Fire of London Spread so far and so fast?

HISTORY MYSTERY: Why did the Great Fire of London Spread so far and so fast?

This lesson asks the big question ‘why did the Great Fire of London Spread so far and so fast in 1666?’. Your students have to evaluate the evidence available to decide what they think was the biggest contributing factor. Students have to infer and reach a reasoned judgement based on the evidence at hand. This includes primary sources and secondary reports. The class works in pairs or groups to decide why the Great Fire of London was able to spread so far in such a short space of time. They assess the evidence to decide whether the main reason was: -Human mistakes, -Weather conditions -Housing -Firefighting equipment. The evidence is not given to them all at once, instead the teacher drip feeds it throughout the lesson. This is in a bid to challenge preconceived ideas and see if pupils will change their minds when faced with new data or sources. The lesson also works well as a station activity with the children moving around the room to gather information. The last task is to write an extended piece (like a DBQ) explaining what the different factors were and what they believe was the biggest contributing factor to the fire spreading in this way. The lesson fits with the common core requirement for students to analyse, evaluate and consider causation. It is designed for the UK National Curriculum and I have kept in the level descriptors as these may help you with grading your students as they are skill descriptors: ie: identify, then describe then explain then evaluate at the top end of ability. But if not they can be easily deleted from the slides. The zip file contains: fully animated powerpoint Clues from the scene worksheet Answer worksheet 9 minute clip from Charles II: Power and the Passion Full lesson plan description My classes have had great fun with this lesson. It can stand alone or be used a a project, for example on Stuart housing. I hope you find this useful and enjoyable. If you do, please check out my other enquiry lessons like this on various topics and I even have a growing bundle of them in my store. Pupil Premium Promise: Life Experience programme (Improve attendance/behaviour/progress)

Pupil Premium Promise: Life Experience programme (Improve attendance/behaviour/progress)

Pupil Premium Promise - Development of the whole child (Life Experience programme) Limited life experiences of pupils from poor socio-economic backgrounds has a direct link with lower attainment. Research offers up the idea that when a young person is exposed to a new experience a cognitive connection is exercised in the brain thus making it more receptive and versatile to learning. If a young person is exposed to lots of experiences then their brains can adapt more. If a pupil receives limited experiences from a young age, then their brain is less likely to adapt to new learning as it has not got the so called ‘versatility’. The Pupil Premium promise does just that. It is a promise that should be made to the pupils that they will achieve before they leave your school. A bucket list of life experiences to develop mind, body and soul. By delivering the pupil premium promise it will have a positive impact on attendance, progress, attitude and behaviour. Happy pupils want to come into school! The resource is completely adaptable for your school.

African Countries and Capitals - Puzzle

African Countries and Capitals - Puzzle

African Countries and Capitals - Puzzle Students should match the countries with their capitals. There are 30 countries and their capitals in the puzzle. Some of the countries are located only partly in Asia. I’ve included three different sizes of the same puzzle. The smaller size is only three pages and is great if you are going to print of individual copies for students to practice in class or at home. The larger size requires 8 pieces of paper and quite a bit of space to solve – fun for centers and group work. The extra-large size requires 24 pieces of paper. Cut out the puzzle pieces (or even better if your students do it themselves) and students are to solve the puzzle so that it matches the solution provided. If your students are going to cut out the pieces then no prep is needed – the puzzle is not in order. I’ve been using these puzzles for years with great success! I recommend printing the puzzles on colourful paper and laminating them. This way you only have to cut them out once and they will last for years! What is included in this product? • The solution to the puzzle – Pages 2 • The normal size puzzle – Pages 3 – 5 • The large size puzzle – Pages 6 – 13 • The extra-large size puzzle – Pages 14-37 • Questions and Answers in a table format for easy grading or you can cut these out to play a matching game – Pages 38 – 40 My students love doing these types of puzzles. This product can also be used as a perfect revision of the school work to do at home. All answers can be easily checked thanks to the included solution to the puzzle or questions and answers shown in a table. Thank you for checking my resources.
