Year 1 - Summer - Block 2 (Fractions) Based on the White Rose Maths Hub

Year 1 - Summer - Block 2 (Fractions) Based on the White Rose Maths Hub

The 50+ worksheets are small step lessons that are differentiated into fluency, apply and challenge tasks. The bundle includes: working wall LO’s, differentiated small steps tasks based on the White Rose Math Hub model, a pre-assessment task (which identifies if a child is ready to start at the fluency or apply level) and a final assessment task. Planning for the unit is now included. Each worksheet includes a quick mark option where you can identify if a child has had further support (FS - guided group), individual support (S), worked independently (I), or requires same day intervention (SDI). You can also provide feedback by highlighting if they are ready to move onto the apply task, challenge or need more fluency, as well as giving a grade for their overall presentation (e.g. A, B or C), if they need to do corrections and which number formations they need help with. All documents are Word documents so they can be edited and modified for your own class. It also includes a blank template so you can create additional resources.

THEME PARK ACTIVITIES

THEME PARK ACTIVITIES

A pack of ten activities that give students the challenge of designing their own theme park given specific criteria, e.g. 70 % of the theme park is designated for rides. The activities are an opportunity to revisit and practice area, percentage, money, ratio, data handling and averages. Two of the activities are English based and ask the students to describe their rides and to adverts and use persuasive writing to promote their theme park. The individual students I have completed these activities with have enjoyed them and they were keen to review, change and improve their original designs. They enjoyed the fact that the activities had a real sense of purpose and that they had freedom to chose and decide how the park was designed. The activities could be used with KS3 students and adapted for KS1.

Algebra - Numbers that satisfy more than one unknown

Algebra - Numbers that satisfy more than one unknown

This is a powerpoint for a lesson based on finding more than one unknown in algebraic equations. I used the excellent resource at https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/algebra-shape-puzzles-11672413?theme=1 for the main activity, differentiated four ways. This lesson received outstanding feedback in a lesson observation. The powerpoint has enough detail in to be used as a lesson plan. Includes lesson starter. This lesson uses bar modelling to show how to work out an unknown in a simple algebraic statement. The plenary extends pupils’ understanding by including unknowns on either side of the equals sign.

Simplifying Surds - Connect 4

Simplifying Surds - Connect 4

A exercise in simplifying Surds in the form of a connect four game. I’m using it on iPads with my current class and asking them to change the boxes to their chosen colours but could be printed, laminated and used with counters. I always find with older students we are sometimes too content driven and wanted something a bit more fun for my S4 class. This could easily be adapted to any topic or the numbers changed to make it easier or harder.

Vary and Twist: Simplifying Ratio

Vary and Twist: Simplifying Ratio

An attempt at some variation theory This one was hard. I spent ages rearranging questions and looking at what should be added. Specifically, I had a massive dilemma when it came to introducing fractions. I was trying to point out the ways in which simplifying fractions and simplifying ratio were similar, but I’m not sure that I haven’t just led students down the wrong path thinking they’re equivalent. For instance 5 : 6 is 5/11 and 6/11, not 5/6. Hmmmm. The variations I used for section A. An example where you can use a prime divisor The opposite way around. What happens to our answer. Order is important! Half one side. 8 : 5 becomes 4 : 5 One that’s already as simple as possible. Time for some questioning? How do you know you can’t simplify it? It’s not just reducing the numbers down. Here you have to multiply up. Deals with what simple is. I have changed this from the picture to make only one number vary from the previous question. Needs a non prime divisor. This isn’t really a variation, though. It has nothing really to do with the previous questions! Again, double one side Double both. Our answer does not double! Adding a third part of the ratio. Changes the answer significantly. Doubling two parts here. Our parts don’t double in our answer! If you amend this and it works better, please let me know.

World Cup Murder Mystery!

World Cup Murder Mystery!

There has been a murder at the world cup! A problem solving murder mystery where children need to use different maths strategies to solve clues to eliminate suspects from a list until only one is left - the murderer. Children will have to solve worded maths problems, multiply, divide and decode to solve the mystery. Great activity for this time of year, children find it enjoyable. Works well in mixed ability pairs.

Fun Maths Quiz

Fun Maths Quiz

Great way to end a term with a class. Start by drawing up a score table on the board with team names down the side (team sizes of 2-4 works nicely) and rounds 1 – 5 along the top. Hand out the “Table topper” and explain that they will have the whole quiz to answer that. Start quiz and swap and mark between rounds. Keep it pacey and the quiz can be completed and marked in 50 minutes. Decide how long to give for the Picture Round depending on how long you want the entire quiz to last. For the music round I downloaded the videos from Youtube (just type ss after the www. in the url)
