Under the Sea Poem Frame + Example, Y2-4

Under the Sea Poem Frame + Example, Y2-4

This intriguingly illustrated sheet sets children dreaming, and the simple line starters prompt them to think up words for their thoughts. Extra-keen writers can add further description about the sea - and anything else related - on the wavy lines below. An example version, showing just one of the infinite ways the poem could be written, is supplied on a separate sheet. Prepare your class by studying and discussing sea flora and fauna, treasure and detritus, mythical creatures and characters, and sounds, shapes and colours, too. Consider caves, sand and rocks, the rusty remains of ancient shipwrecks, picnic items washed away, bubbles, echoes - all sorts! Build up banks of describing words, imagery, action words and onomatopoeias as you go, but informally, keeping the atmosphere as free as the sea. Alliteration might crop up (e.g. shimmery and shiny) but don’t force it. Let individual creativity flow!

Show pictures of the sea and discuss that too, building word ideas for the first line - ‘In the _, _, _ sea…’ A great end-of-term activity for a hot summer’s day.

COASTAL EROSION - WHY THE BARMSTON BUNGALOWS ON THE CLIFF TOP WERE CONDEMNED

COASTAL EROSION - WHY THE BARMSTON BUNGALOWS ON THE CLIFF TOP WERE CONDEMNED

This unit has a focus on coastal erosion at Barmston. (East Coast England). It is about wave energy, cliff recession, storms in the North Sea and Storm surges bringing sea levels higher than normal to undercut the cliffs along the coastline at Barmston. This unit indicates the links between erosional forces and the consequences of cliff recession on the owners of the bungalows (we would call them houses in Australia). This material has been used in a series of coastal studies within the Australian curriculum at lower secondary and at senior secondary levels. It promotes interest and when placed on the screen the material becomes a source of questioning and discussion. The attached pages of rhyming verse were student creations and contributions (with some editing). This unit can standalone or it can fit into studies of coastal geomorphology. Hopefully this will be a useful support for coastal studies. Come and see where the bungalows once stood and with your students you will be able to work out why they are no longer there. It’s a true story with powerful undercurrents.

WHERE ON EARTH ARE THE TOP TEN ISLANDS OF THE WORLD - A CLASSROOM PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

WHERE ON EARTH ARE THE TOP TEN ISLANDS OF THE WORLD - A CLASSROOM PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

If you are looking for a ready made classroom activity that can involve a mixture of on screen discussion, use of student knowledge and opportunity for student research then this unit will fit the requirement. This standalone activity is one in a series that will expand student locational and global knowledge as it poses the basic question of "where in the world are…" Well you could provide printed sheets with maps and tables showing the TEN TOP ISLANDS but if you do that then that takes away the challenge of discovery and allows for the possibility that the material will remain rather lifeless and forgotten. Most students like the challenge of discovery and when/if they become involved in the process they will remember the names and possibly the order of the islands they discover. How about starting with a blank screen and ask for suggestions of the TEN TOP ISLANDS (by area). You should get a few - some will be in the top ten and some will not. THEN screen page 2 with the country flags. You can then remove those islands from the initial list that are not on the flag list. The next activity is to screen the table of the TOP TEN ISLANDS with its many blanks. Your students should have a hard copy of that page. HONSHU JAPAN is provided as an example of the fill in. THEN show the screens with the outline of the TOP TEN ISLANDS. Some of those may be known and can possibly be placed in the correct rank order. There are additional clues for those who look carefully. Once you have a few islands in the correct slots the final order becomes easier. Oh! If you do become stumped there is help available in the final pages but hopefully you won’t need that. To consolidate the locational knowledge there is a world map which provides an opportunity for students to have their own record of the TOP TEN. There will be other units in the TOP…whatever series. Enjoy the discover along with your class.
