#### STEM WORLD CUP MATHS SPY CAPER. GROUP WORK TEAM BUILDING. END OF YEAR ACTIVITY.

ALL proceeds from this lesson resource will be donated to the charity STECS (Scottish Terrier Emergency Care Scheme UK). So please ask colleagues to purchase rather than “share”. This is an engaging, editable maths STEM activity with a World Cup & Russian spy theme. So it really works well for KS3 pupils who are interested in Football and also those who are totally not! Pupils use a cipher wheel to solve maths questions in each round (differentiated, some easy some more challenging), to find a Russian spy. It requires pupils moving around the school and some support from other colleagues eg receptionist, lab techs-maybe you could even convince the Head teacher to act as the spy? Everyone involved really enjoyed it. This took 2 hours, but could be shortened by removing middle rounds. I have had really good feedback from a variety of teachers at my school who delivered this maths based STEM lesson as non subject specialists (form tutors) during a collapsed timetable week at school with KS3 pupils . This could also be used as team building activity for staff and pupils.

#### Angles in polygons, including exterior and exterior; Angles within circles; Pictures, Videos and Worksheets

This is a bundle of 6 of my resources regarding angles! 5 documents are generators, which means at the click of any button you are able to generate a new worksheet. This provides a calm atmosphere in learning, familiarity in resources for students and can demonstrate progress over time. 3 of these documents are worksheet generators, which require students to find angles within polygons by viewing the polygons themselves. The easiest worksheet just regards triangles and straight lines. The medium worksheet involves quadrilaterals, simple algebra, and straight lines. Whereas the last worksheet involves a multitude of polygons. Each come with a supporting tab call a ‘cheat sheet’, containing an answer for every question listed on a separate bit of paper. These can be individually cut up and folded along the dotted line to act as supporting answers, You can use thesse at your discretion to support the least able, enabling these worksheets to be low access high challenge. Furthermore, another of these documents also requires you to find missing angles and lengths within various polygons by using algebra. Helpfully there is are hints which can either be included, or not included on the sheet, as they are on the sheet’s extremities so can easily can be cut off. Another worksheet regards angles, but this time they are entirely worded question. Testing students knowledge on exterior angles as well as interior angles this time. Finally the last document is a powerpoint involving 5 videos of me hand drawing different circle theorems. Each of the videos are silent but supported by questioning on the screen. This has proved to be a very useful tool in maximising student engagement, and getting the students to come up with the questions and answers themselves whilst watching the video, whilst you are able to help individuals or manage behaviour as required. Each of the videos, has futher suggestion points, and each can be paused and resumed at a pace that suits your class. Please review if you found useful :)

#### Sectors of Circles: Area in terms of pi.

#### Maths / STEM / Science Project Lesson - Density of Metals (Density, Ratio, Volume)

This is a Maths/STEM project lesson based around calculating and comparing the density of different metals. Students have to first calculate and rank the densities of the metals, than answer questions based on combining different ratios of metals. These questions involve working out density, volume or mass from compound metal alloys of differing ratios. The lesson was pitched at year 10, and has a support sheet to enable access for foundation students. The lesson was designed to last 75 minutes, but actually the difficult quesitons in the sheet means it could easily last 90 minutes or more if required.

#### Circle theorem and algebra

Few questions I wrote where students have to set up and solve equations, using their knowledge of circle theorems. Please note on the handwritten sheet, I made a mistake. One of the cyclic quadrilaterals and simultaneous equations does not work, the equations are parallel. I usually sell it as “I have made one deliberate mistake”

#### Fully resourced lesson on geometric patterns is Islamic Art

Most suitable for key stage 3. Looks at geometry in Islamic Art. Students then create their designs using either compasses (higher groups) or isometric/square grids (may be better with lower groups). Probably good for end of module/term lesson Resources in the lesson gathered from all over the place, but thought it would be useful to have in one place as a single lesson.

#### Circle theorems lesson 8

A complete lesson on the theorem that a perpendicular bisector of a chord passes through the centre of a circle. Assumes pupils can already use the theorems that: The angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference The angle in a semicircle is 90 degrees Angles in the same same segment are equal .Opposite angles in a cyclic quadrilateral sum to 180 degrees A tangent is perpendicular to a radius Angles in alternate segments are equal Tangents from a point are equal so that more varied questions can be asked. Please see my other resources for lessons on these theorems. Activities included: Starter: An animation reminding pupils about perpendicular bisectors, with the intention being that they would then practice this a few times with ruler and compass. Main: Instructions for pupils to investigate the theorem, by drawing a circle, chord and then bisecting the chord. Slides to clarify the ‘two-directional’ nature of the theorem. Examples of missing angle or length problems using the theorem (plus another theorem, usually) A similar set of eight questions for pupils to consolidate. An extension prompt for pupils to use the theorem to locate the exact centre of a given circle. Plenary: An animation of the proof without words, the intention being that pupils try to describe the steps. Printable worksheets and answers included. Please review if you buy, as any feedback is appreciated!
