Created for a year 3/4 class. It covers basic coordinates, 2D shape recognition, translation and angles. I use it as a formative assessment at the end of my properties of shapes topic in mathematics. Area and Perimeter This is a no-prep printable challenge. There are 36 boxes - each box shows a measurement for a square. Match pairs of measurements to make 18 squares. (e.g. Side = 7cm would match with Area = 49cm squared). One side has not been filled in – the challenge is to find the missing answer to make 18 matching pairs. All answers are included. This resource can be used as a worksheet. The questions are non-calculator. The document is 5 pages in total, but you will only need to print out 1 page for the students. Many students tend to do well with the computational components of mathematics. Unfortunately, the same pupils tend to have difficulty with thoroughly explaining how they solved the problems in written form. As educators, we know that students being able to explain their solution processes are a crucial component to long-term retention of the mathematical concepts they need to succeed in numeracy mastery. This mini unit deals with classifying triangles by angle measurement. This study provides a week-long lesson that incorporates multiple opportunities for your students to solve real-world problems computationally. Then, it requires that they explain their solution process in both an oral (Accountable Talk), and a written (Brief Constructed Response) format. Within these responses, the students are encouraged to use logical thinking to PROVE or JUSTIFY (Higher Level Bloom’s Taxonomy Components) their solution processes. This action enables the student to think about the steps they took to get to the answer-a process that has been proven to enhance student retention of relevant skills in mathematics. Lastly, the students are required to complete a Student Self-Assessment. This part of the unit is also crucial to student interpretation and retention of the solution process because it needs them to think about their form of thinking and be accountable to what is involved in effectively solving a word problem. Measurement Problem Solving KS2 Romans

This activity combined our History topic of Romans, with our Maths focus of measurement, plus a little bit of shapes and fractions thrown as an assessment of the previous units taught. Students receive a letter from Emperor Hadrian, with the command to rebuild sections of Hadrian`s Wall. They then worked in differientiated groups for calculate the correct measurements for the wall. Once the correct measurements had been calculated they then used their knowledge of 3-D shapes to build the wall. I have included the activity and instructions in pdf and word format for editing. My class loved it, but I have to be honest - it took them all morning! Learning Objectives covered: Geometry: Property of Shapes: • Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling materials. Measurement: • Measure, compare, and add lengths (m/cm/mm) • Continue to measure using the appropriate tools and units, progressing to using a wider range of measures, including comparing and using mixed units and simple equivalents of mixed units (for example, 5m = 500cm). Fractions: • Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects. • Recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10
