Speed Distance Time

Speed Distance Time

6 differentiated Four in a Row / Connect Four style game boards for consolidation of Speed, Distance and Time calculations, to suit Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2) or early KS3 (originally designed for a Year 6 / Y6 class). This is a fun alternative activity to additional jotter / textbook work on this maths / numeracy topic, after pupils have been introduced to (or revised) the formulae D=SxT, S=D÷T and T=D÷S. ANSWER VERSIONS of all games are included. Contains a more simple (one star) and more challenging (two star) version for each of: Distance Travelled Average Speed Time Taken In addition to featuring generally more challenging calculations, the two-star versions of each require conversion between units in some cases. Print and laminate the boards for regular use. I recommend printing boards in A3 if possible (or enlarging them to A3 on the copier) but A4 will be okay too. Pupils work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a die each time to find which column to pick a calculation from (the columns are numbered 1-6). If there are no calculations left in the column whose number they have rolled, they either skip a go or roll again (depending on the rules you have chosen). Pupils write their answers on the board with a whiteboard marker. They could either use a different coloured pen to record answers on the board or add an initial or symbol if using the same coloured pen as their opponent. I hope your students enjoy playing these games. What about this festive mental maths puzzle pack? Distance-Speed-Time lesson

Distance-Speed-Time lesson

I used this with my top set year 8's but it can be adapted for sets/years. In addition to the slides here, I used other resources found on TES for additional practice for the students as I have only included one page of questions in the flipchart. (There is a free car activity available which I used though it needed more structure for my year 8's). This DST lesson consists of a starter where the children need to convert minutes into hours using fractions. With two further slides for those who may need some additional support and some more complex questions. There are two end plenary questions which could be answered on mini whiteboards to check students understanding at the end. The lesson consists of activities for the students to do individually, in pairs or as a whole class discussion led by the teacher. All answers are provided within the flipchart.
