Literacy Unit of Work: Kensuke’s Kingdom (4 complete weeks and activities)
This unit of work uses the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom written by Michael Morpurgo to develop reading and writing skills in an easy to follow way. The text is shared with the students through whole class reading and are encouraged to respond to the text through questioning and activities stopping at relevant parts. Throughout the scheme of work there are also SPaG starter activities mainly aimed at year 6 objectives but this could easily be adapted to suit any year group.
The writing genres that are taught within this four week block are: diary entries, character descriptions, newspaper reports finally leading to the students writing and creating their own survival guide (How to survive being marooned on a desert island!).
There are also opportunities to actively teach the students how to proof read and edit their own writing cutting down on teacher marking and work load.
PLEASE NOTE: The white board slides have been created as flipcharts (ActivInspire - Studio) however, these can easily opened in SMART Notebook or Powerpoint.
If you use this unit of work, please remember to rate and leave a comment.
