This resource is designed for KS2 children. It is part of a wider unit called Exploring St Lucia which is designed to teach children about a contrasting non-European country. First the presentation introduces children to the tropical climate zone (dry and wet seasons) and its associated weather (i.e. high temperatures and high rainfall). It compares this with temperate climates such as that of the UK. Children are also encouraged to interpret data from a climate graph for St Lucia. Finally, other aspects of a tropical climate are covered including tropical storms and hurricanes. The accompanying differentiated true/false activity helps children to recap what they have learned about the climates of St Lucia and the UK. There is also an extension activity. Using compass directions to locate places in St Lucia

This resource is designed for KS2 children. It is part of a wider unit called Exploring St Lucia which is designed to teach children about a contrasting non-European country. First the presentation introduces children to the directions of the compass. It then helps children to locate places in St Lucia using compass directions - first using the four cardinal points (N, E, S, W), then also using the four ordinal points (NE, SE, SW, NW). The accompanying activity gives children a chance to locate places in St Lucia using both the cardinal and ordinal points of the compass. It is differentiated two ways. There is also an extension activity which challenges children to think about where places in St Lucia are located in relation to each other (e.g. Castries is north of Mount Gimie). Lesson 2: Challenging perceptions of Africa - KS3 Geography Africa Unit 2017

1. Pre-starter task “How many legs does the elephant have?” followed by “What can you see?” 2. Begin discussion that not everything is quite as we see it – link to perceptions of Africa. 3. Pupils write down three words on three post-its associated with Africa. This will be used towards the end of the lesson to reflect on. 4. Discuss the actual size of Africa – bring in idea of Mercator maps and size disparities of continents. 5. Mental images task – pupils look at the images and complete their work sheet. 6. Define stereotype – follow up with the infographics of Africa to further challenge the stereotypes. 7. Pupils rewrite three words on another set of posts it notes – has these words changed from their original ones? Why? If it hasn’t, why not? 8. Africa Quiz – to complete individually. H/W for MAS – Extended writing task. Describe how perceptions and images of Africa can be misleading. Please review :)

Geography unit based on map work/skills

4 lesson unit of work for KS1 Geography with a focus on map skills. Differentiation largely happened through outcomes. Pupils enjoyed creating their own maps of the school area and explaining the symbols they used.
