Writing & Colouring Sheet - Fish are...

Writing & Colouring Sheet - Fish are...

This is a simple, black and white, hand-illustrated creativity sheet for EYFS pupils. It offers a single line (at the top) for descriptive writing, with the starter words “Fish are”. The space below is filled with a picture, drawn from imagination and observation, of a fish in an underwater setting. The resource supports multiple curricular areas, namely: Literacy, Expressive Arts & Design and Physical Development (fine motor skills) and Understanding The World. The attractive design has been proven to motivate young children to think up and try to write descriptive words for the fish, and to experiment with colours and pencil control in colouring the picture. Prepare for use by inspiring interest, building understanding and eliciting appropriate describing words. This can be done by showing pictures or videos of fish in the sea, looking at some in an aquarium, reading a story about a fish and enacting them together. Prompt for a range of familiar and less usual describing words, such as ‘shiny’, ‘scaly’, ‘fast’, ‘floaty’, ‘swimming’, ‘twitchy’, ‘darting’, ‘wet’, ‘sparkly’, ‘deep’, ‘pretty’, ‘colourful’, ‘bright’, ‘blue’, ‘red’, ‘green’, ‘silver’ and ‘gold’. Encourage ‘having a go’ and ‘sounding out’ the words.
