Astronaut Jim - reading comprehension with True / False questions and creative activity

Astronaut Jim - reading comprehension with True / False questions and creative activity

This activity is for young ESL learners (aged 7 - 14). It is useful due to the fact that it deals with space vocabulary, repeats new words several times in the text to ensure that the words stick and has pictures that help children follow what is happening in the story. For stronger students, they will not need the pictures, but weaker students can use this to their advantage. The True / False questions aid their reading comprehension. You can also monitor their pronunciation as you can ask them to read out loud. Learning Objectives: To use the space vocabulary studied. To understand how an English story is set out on the page. To practise the present simple tense. To apply preexisting vocabulary to a new theme (colours to space for example) How I used this worksheet/recommended: Teach vocabulary to do with space (I used flashcards for this). Ask students what life is like on a different planet (elicit the words scary, exciting, fun etc.) Tell students that we are going to read a story about aliens. Children read out loud in turns. Children do the True/False by themselves. Correct as a class. Children ‘wind down’ by designing their own planet with aliens and labelling it. (Practises writing skills) This is an excellent activity which was received well by all my students, ranging from 7 to 12.

Ideas in the Modern World

Ideas in the Modern World

This activity is based around the Cambridge English as a Second Language textbook and it's designed to help lower level students with vocabulary in 3 areas: technology, modern world, and data and information. This activity can be used in conjunction with a reading or a writing task, and can be used as an introduction to the overall idea of the modern world or any of the 3 areas identified. I have used it for both reading and writing lessons, and I have divided the class into groups and got them to identify vocabulary linked to each topic. I then board their responses and then show my suggested word list. We identify the same vocabulary from each area and discuss any differences in our lists. This can be a useful introduction task for stronger students or could be a whole lesson for a weaker group.

The associated activity includes visual texts (images), a series of questions to guide classroom interactions, and vocabulary for elicitation toward developing effective speaking and writing skills. This is a semi-structured activity where students are encouraged to draw on their own experiences of different places. The activity moves the student from being a visual spectator to being a textual critic. This resource can be adapted for a particular curriculum or used in a stand alone session of 2-4 hours.
