Games and Activities for New Teachers

This resource is designed mainly for primary school teachers new to the profession. I have brought together educational games and activities under three main categories: Listening, Numeracy and Literacy. Within each of these categories I have further categorized the games/activities into ‘Nursury/Reception’, ‘Lower Primary’ and ‘Upper Primary’. There is also a page listing a few suggestions for activities in ‘other’ subject areas and a page of websites which I have found brilliant as a teacher; some are helpful for demonstrating concepts or finding inspiration, others as an interactive resource for children to use. Every teacher needs the odd ‘filler’ which can be used either at the end of a session, or as a rewarding activity when planned work has been completed. This resource should also prove useful to supply teachers who find themselves having to fill time constructively. These activities are supposed to be both fun and educational. I have tried almost every one of them out and classes often beg to be able to do them. The trick is to refer to the activities as ‘games’ so children see them as fun. My aim is that these activities should help teachers to develop good listening skills. As every teacher knows, these are vital. Without the ability to listen well, children are not teachable. This resource is very much a ‘work in progress’. I will add to it and would welcome any ideas. In the meantime, I hope it will prove useful. It is no accident that Cambridge University recently created a position for a Professor of ‘play’. These ‘games’ provide an ideal opportunity for learning which is relevant to the curriculum. Additionally the activities will help develop life skills such as the ability to work together and listen to each other. I would hope that they also engage children who find it less easy to focus since they are accessible.

The lesson focuses on why voting is important. Ready to go and fully adaptable! Includes fully differentiated Lesson Objectives/Outcomes based on Bloom’s Taxonomy; allowing students to take charge of their learning by focusing on what they want to achieve by the end of the lesson. Includes, a mock vote activity, politician match-up activity, where students learn who all the main UK politicians are and what they do. Understand key UK political buildings, and a HMWK activity, which can be used to form a display. As students, enter the classroom, there is a ‘Entrance Ticket’ Activity/DO IT NOW! It’s a simple A4 sheet which shows what students should aim to do and follow whilst they are in the classroom. Making sure they are prepared for learning. The poster could be printed in large and displayed in a prominent place in the classroom. Or you could print them in small and glue them into students’ books or diaries, to make sure they always know what the rules are and what they should strive for in your classroom. Focusing, on the fact that students should be prepared for learning, they should – dream big, try new things and not be afraid to make mistakes, believe in themselves and work hard. A simple and effective display poster which you can use to show students what format they will be learning in the lesson; independently, in partners, in teams or as a class. Great for visual learners, as resource is clear and focused with few words, colour and diagrams. The poster explains to students, what they should do in that format, i.e. if independently they should be in silence, working alone and staying on task. Simply move the arrow to indicate how they will be learning in that part of the lesson. Great to differentiate tasks and work in the classroom, handing over to the student more for a flipped-learning approach to classroom based learning! You, could print this out, in large and display in a prominent and focusing place in the classroom, i.e. above your smartboard or whiteboard etc. Or you could include these in your lesson PPT. Regardless of their age, all students love a puzzle - learning and fun at the same time! Motivate and enthuse your students with these five differentiated jigsaw puzzles which have the advantage of combining learning about the parable of ‘The Lost Sheep’ with the enjoyment of playing.
