Feelings / emotions activity for social skills

Feelings / emotions activity for social skills

A resource I made for a mixed group of ks1 / ks2 children with autism / social communication needs. Aim is to develop greater understanding of feelings and to begin to develop awareness of other's feelings, also turn taking and attention and listening. Resource includes a feelings poster and 18 cards describing situations that have happened to an imaginary child - e.g. 'She has a wobbly tooth'. We discuss the various feelings an how children are feeling today. Cards are placed face down and children take turns to turn cards over. They consider how the person may be feeling. More able groups could be prompted / questioned to consider would everyone feel that way in that situation (some people can't stand having wobbly teeth, others get excited...) further developing theory of mind and understanding that people can feel differently about situations.

A new version of Othello - teacher resources to support a visit

A new version of Othello - teacher resources to support a visit

This pack is for Primary School teachers bringing pupils to see the Unicorn Theatre's production of Othello in spring 2018. The pack includes an exploration of the themes within the play, interviews with creative team members and a series of drama activities and lesson plans that you can pick and choose from. This pack aims to support teachers to confidently use drama in the classroom and to enrich and extend the benefits of visiting the theatre. https://www.unicorntheatre.com/Othello The Unicorn production of Othello, by Ignace Cornelisson and inspired by Shakespeare's original, focuses on the young lovers, Othello and Desdemona, and explores what happens when emotions run out of control. Othello has never been in love before; he doesn’t understand or have the words to express this new emotion that he’s experiencing. There are those who wish to exploit Othello’s emotional naivety and soon he is engulfed in other powerful feelings: distrust, jealousy, confusion and anger, all which blind him to the truth and lead him to destroy the person he loves most. The drama activities are designed to support and extend pupils’ visit to the theatre and offer teachers ways to pick up on and explore the themes in the play, before and after a visit. They will use drama and storytelling as ways of exploring ideas that are relevant to the play and to support National Curriculum requirements: ‘All pupils should be enabled to participate in and gain knowledge, skills and understanding associated with the artistic practice of drama. Pupils should be able to adopt, create and sustain a range of roles, responding appropriately to others in role. They should have opportunities to improvise, devise and script drama for one another and a range of audiences, as well as to rehearse, refine, share and respond thoughtfully to drama and theatre performances.’ National Curriculum The resources also provide National Curriculum links at Key Stages Two and Three: to English through the development of spoken word and writing tasks, and to SMCS aspects of learning.
