KS1 Dance – Toys SOL

(1)
UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 21/02/2022 This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of toys (or any topic connected to toys, gifts, celebration etc). This ‘Toys’ scheme of work is great to teach after the holiday season. It allows pupils to share their holiday experience through emotion and movement games along with developing their creativity through choreography tasks. This SOL comes with: 6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching. A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson. A CPD document that should help with aspects of teaching dance that a none dance specialist might find helpful. Notes: The timings of the lesson and the activities within the lesson plans can of course be adapted. Activities can be changed, lengthened, shortened, taken out, differentiated etc. Feel free to adapt this resource to suit your own needs as well as the needs of the children. Feel free to use your own music. I used ‘Epic Music – Toys Come Alive’ on YouTube I loved teaching this SOL and I hope you do too. If you find it helpful, I would massively appreciate it if you could leave me a review 

The power point goes through some toys which sink and float, giving opportunities for teacher talk around why thinks float and how to make predictions. The power point also introduces both the first and second activities. The first activity asks pupils to make predictions based on what will or won’t float. KS1 Dance - Toy Story

(0)
5 Creative dance lessons suitable for ks1 or lower ks2 based on the original Toy Story film. The lessons focus on the characters & their qualities/attributes. These lessons have been written with covid 19 restrictions in mind & whilst still allowing the children to work together they do not require physical contact, limit travelling around the space and the activity level is moderate & sustained rather than high impact. Each lesson follows a simple step by step format where the teacher is simply required to ask questions to stimulate movement ideas in the children; there are hints & tips along the way to guide the teacher how long each task might last & what they can do to further support learning. Further to this the skills that each section of the lesson focus upon are noted in a column on the right. The lessons can be performed in any order & you do not need to cover all of them.

Investigating toys

(0)
Topic – Toys Children love to investigate items, so why not encourage them to investigate materials toys are made from. This resource is a great tool to encourage children to develop their speaking and listening skills. It gives them opportunities to look at, touch and talk about different toys and what materials they think they are made from. It creates great social opportunities, and allows you as a teacher to develop their language skills, and understanding of different textures and materials. There are three different sheets for the children to record their findings. You could also add observations of the children’s discussions to show their understanding.
