UPDATED AND IMPROVED ON 21/02/2022
This resource is for KS1 teachers teaching dance through the Physical Education part of the national curriculum during the topic of toys (or any topic connected to toys, gifts, celebration etc).
This ‘Toys’ scheme of work is great to teach after the holiday season. It allows pupils to share their holiday experience through emotion and movement games along with developing their creativity through choreography tasks.
This SOL comes with:
6 lesson plans, detailing the activities in each lesson along with coaching points to aid teaching.
A 6 lesson PowerPoint including notes under each slide to help with the delivery of the lesson.
A CPD document that should help with aspects of teaching dance that a none dance specialist might find helpful.
Notes:
The timings of the lesson and the activities within the lesson plans can of course be adapted. Activities can be changed, lengthened, shortened, taken out, differentiated etc.
Feel free to adapt this resource to suit your own needs as well as the needs of the children.
Feel free to use your own music. I used ‘Epic Music – Toys Come Alive’ on YouTube
I loved teaching this SOL and I hope you do too. If you find it helpful, I would massively appreciate it if you could leave me a review

This History of Toys knowledge organiser is designed for an EYFS/KS1 Class (year R-2). This knowledge organiser is designed to introduce the children to the topic, encourage independence in learning and provide children with the key information they will learn more about during the topic. The sections included are a toy invention time line, key facts, key vocabulary and lots of useful images and questions.
This document links to the 'Toys from the Past&' KS1 scheme of work. It contains lesson ideas, images, historical research, games, cross curricular links and a glossary of key terms. This was produced by The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry.

Topic – Toys
Children love to investigate items, so why not encourage them to investigate materials toys are made from. This resource is a great tool to encourage children to develop their speaking and listening skills. It gives them opportunities to look at, touch and talk about different toys and what materials they think they are made from. It creates great social opportunities, and allows you as a teacher to develop their language skills, and understanding of different textures and materials.
There are three different sheets for the children to record their findings. You could also add observations of the children’s discussions to show their understanding.
Are you teaching about different toys. Here are some nice presentations which let you compare different toys from now and in the past. It also has great English story writing prompt to help your students get more out of this topic.

Victorians - Victorian Toys (KS2)
This lesson has many pictures of Victorian toys and pictures of Victorians children with their toys. Rich and poor children’s toys. A link is also included that shows lots of different Victorians toys that children may recognise. Also included in one of the slides is a class comparison activity to teach how to compare and what to look for.
This lesson is in PowerPoint format and can be taught as it is or changed to suit individual classes. Detailed PowerPoint Lesson with 20 slides.
This lesson comes with a suggested activity or task that is also attached. The task for this lesson is a comparison activity and pictures.
Learning objectives
• To learn about Victorian Toys
• To compare Victorian Toys with modern Toys
A primary history lesson which teaches children about their parents toys from the past. This lesson to investigate different toys in this lesson by looking at their materials and the use of technology in past toys. These include toys like football and building toys like blocks. From this unit and lesson the children should know about modern toys and their parents’ toys so that next lesson when they look at their grandparents toys they can see the change and continuity in toys.
This resource is a powerpoint presentation and is a useful resource in exploring parents’ toys through questioning of the pupils. It is a discussion led lesson. It also includes a worksheet which children are to complete with their favourite toy, and how the toy was treated.
How I use this resource: This resource is a powerpoint which is shared at the front of the class with the children. This lesson works best if you ask children to bring in toys or provide toys as a school, this would allow a more hands on feel to the lesson. The task is to be completed in small groups so children can complete their sentences with an adult.

This activity can be used to help children understand the difference between old and new toys.
Children are presented with several pictures. They are encouraged to talk about each picture, discussing what they can see, and whether they think the toy is old or new and why.
Children can then glue the pictures onto the correct side.
This activity develops children’s speaking and listening skills along with their understanding of time. It is advisable to show children a selection of old and new toys before completing this activity, so they can see the difference between them.
