Following work on various ways of separating simple mixtures, the children follow instructions to make some alien soup and then have to work out how to separate it back into individual pots of each solid.
I used this resource as a baseline assessment with KS3 and KS4 EBD kids, who have fallen out of mainstream education. It allowed me to see whether they could handle equipment sensibly, name equipment, choose appropriate equipment for solving a problem and follow instructions. It gave me a platform to explore their prior knowledge and thinking processes.The more able were able to make links to scientific applications.The title is attention grabbing and prompted one individual to ask 'What has this got to do with science ? ' Perfect.
