This pdf includes 16 pages of environmental labels suitable for the Early Years or pre-formal SEN classroom. Two sets included one with and one without pictures.

Each label is coded to highlight letters and groups of letters (graphemes or sound spellings) to support reading.

Coding includes a gradual left to right darkening of sound spellings to encourage blending through the word.

Multi-syllable words display colour grading within the word for blending syllable by syllable and suffixes are shown in dark green.

Includes coded modelled behaviour or the ‘good’ strategies to support positive behaviour.

Pupils’ attention can be drawn to the sounds in words and their relationship to the graphemes in the words. Teachers and TAs can model blending to show how they use this knowledge to work out the word. This prepares pupils for phonics instruction ahead.

Pupils should not be encouraged to learn the words as ‘visual wholes’ or ‘sight words’.
