People and the Environment: Lesson 1
Students to create a line graph showing the change in the worlds population. Key Question: Explain factors that affect the change in population.

Students use Figure 1 and come up with at least three bullet points showing the changes to the worlds population growth. Students then answer these two questions;

  1. Using an atlas and referring to individual countries, as well as physical regions (such as climate or vegetation zones), describe the pattern of population growth rate.
  2. Suggest reasons for the patterns described.
    Extension: Which factor do you think has the most impact on the growth of the world’s population?

Students read through the fact file on Niger and answer the exam question.
Exam Question: How is the strength of the economy likely to impact on natural population change? (9)

Homework - Using the Human Development Index (http://hdr.undp.org/en/countries) and your own research to complete the following table for five countries with significantly different HDI ranks.

Debate - Does the economy have the biggest impact on natural population change? Students to place their names on the opinion line and discuss as a class if they agree or disagree with the statement.
