Melody Composition Unit

This unit is designed to introduce students to writing a composition in the style of Minuet in G. Through analysing this melody, students are introduced to the structural elements of motif and sequence. Students employ these elements to create their own composition.

This bundle features:

• A student workbook with step-by-step instructions to create motifs, sequences and analyse the melody of Minuet in G. It also includes visual guides to assist students in writing their composition.

• A teacher guide that contains the learning intention and success criteria for each lesson.

• A composition journal to accompany students in the composition process.

• Several arrangements of Minuet in G for guitar and piano.

• Posters to create a vocabulary word wall related to this task.

• MP3 audio of the piano arrangement of the entire Minuet in G major.

This task can be used as an assessment for a topic on composition or western art music.

This task is aimed at students with varying abilities and aims to develop a student’s understanding of writing a melody by following strict guidelines. Furthermore, it aims to develop a student’s understanding of how sequences can be employed in creating melodies and for the more advanced student, how they can be employed in improvisation to develop a solo.
