Use this PowerPoint to discuss Oliver's motives for helping Nancy e.g. she has had a similar life to Oliver, the is a good person, she doesn't want Oliver to be involved in a life of crime etc. Helpful as a basis for discussing character. Students then rank the motives and use the handout as a 'pie chart' showing her motives. Used for a low ability 7th grade set, could be adapted with less scaffolding for higher ability groups.
