Probability Reasoning Tasks

Several tasks all based on the infamous ‘Hannah’s Sweets’ Edexcel GCSE question about combined probability. These tasks are designed to improve students’ mathematical reasoning and were created as part of the Mathematical Reasoning at GCSE project run by Cambridge Maths Hub.

The tasks vary in difficulty, and include work on writing expressions, mutually exclusive and independent events, using probability diagrams (probability/frequency trees, Venn and 2-way table), combining probabilities of multiple events and forming and solving quadratic equations. They are not intended to be used all together; just pick and choose one or two suitable ones for your class.

The Venn diagram task is an excellent idea I swiped from the amazing Mr Barton.

A similar set of tasks on a different application of quadratic expressions can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/algebraic-area-reasoning-tasks-11838759.

Please please consider leaving some feedback. I’d be really interested to hear which tasks you chose and how you used them!
