Giraffes Can't Dance Lesson Plans & Activities Package, Second Grade (CCSS)

This set of lesson plans, resources, and activities is for use with “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae. It can be used for whole group, small group, and independent instruction – which makes these resources a smart choice for literacy centers or Reader’s Workshop. Here’s What You’ll Get and Why: My goal was to make it easy to teach readers how to think about “Giraffes Can’t Dance” using a variety of comprehension strategies. That’s why I’ve included page by page lesson plans, guided practice worksheets, and text specific reader’s notebook prompts for the following strategies: Making Predictions Determining Importance Asking Questions Understanding Text Structure Synthesizing I also created an Extension Activity for early finishers. Next, I find that vocabulary instruction works best when it’s done within the context of books that students are already reading. That’s why I’ve included the following vocabulary resources: Vocabulary Word List Flash Cards (match words to pictures and match words to definitions) Interactive Vocabulary Notebook Cards Vocabulary Word Games Printable Personal Vocabulary Word Bookmark I’ve also included a word study lesson plan and set of activities, because, much like vocabulary, I find that word study works best within context. As a result, I have identified word patterns within trade books and have developed lesson plans and resources based on the word study that can be done with specific books. The lesson plan and set of resources for “Giraffes Can’t Dance” focuses on Contractions and includes the following: Lesson Plan Interactive Activity Practice Page Independent Word Work This set of resources also includes the following: Running Record Assessment Common Core Aligned Comprehension Assessment Answer Keys Common Core State Standard Alignment Spanish translation of the comprehension strategy practice pages, reader’s notebook prompts (complete with Spanish Common Core “I Can” statements), and extension activities for use with Giraffes Can’t Dance BONUS: Surprise Sample Resource I hope that you will enjoy using my resources along with your copy or copies of “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae.

Bee Phonics Fun Phonics Game

Bee Phonics Fun Phonics Game

Bee Phonics is a great tool to help students master reading. It contains eight variants of a phonics board. Four of the variants contain writing lines. First, students say each sound of a word very slowly and then they read the whole word quickly. Once they’ve done it, they get a nectar point. They need to collect at least 9 nectar points to win. I’ve created a couple of versions of the nectar points and the boards where students place their points. The file also includes phonics tiles with blends, digraphs, trigraphs and other letter combinations. This means that you can create lots of different words using them. Reading/Phonics Game - KS1

Reading/Phonics Game - KS1

Which words fit the topic? that’s the simple challenge here. Children have to read a selection of words to work out which apply to the given category (e.g. colours) and which ones don’t. There are 4 of these challenges, spread down the page, with colour variation for clarity and added fun. Able readers can complete these independently, linking or ticking relevant words with a pencil; less confident readers will need support (either one-to-one or group). Some words may be instantly recognisable, such as ‘red’ or ‘hot’, but others will need to be sounded out. Ideal for phonics learning and reading practice.

Build a Sentence - unifix sentence blocks template

Build a Sentence - unifix sentence blocks template

I designed this for our more abled Nursery children, but it would work for Reception age too. It is set into 3 levels. The Red level is for them to independently find words on the sentence maker blocks to make the sentence to match the pictures. The Orange level requires them to find some of the CVC words. The Green Level is a reading task of matching the words to build the sentence. There is the opportunity on all sheets for them to write the sentence once they have build it. it is more proof of concept rather than a finished resource. But feel free to use and modify if it is useful.

A Year of Spellng Centers

A Year of Spellng Centers

Struggle to get your students to learn their spelling words? Tired of the frequent refrain of “I’m bored” whenever you assign spelling work? No more! With this package, the variety and hands-on approach with help any student master their weekly words. This package includes 21 printable activities and 39 hands-on activities that can easily be done with common items that are likely already around your house or classroom. In my grade 1 class, we run these activities for approximately 3 weeks. Some are repeated more often according to student preferences and needs. There are 4 centers per week because of the spelling test on Friday and the frequency of 4 days weeks. These centers take about 20 minutes each day to complete and are great to pair with silent and shared reading to fill an entire period (40 minutes). Further, these centers allow me to work with individuals while the group is doing something meaningful and useful. This package includes all the printable centers in both .doc (editable) and pdf (font protected) format. It also contains a list of all 60 centers.
