Castle picture, detailed, looking in, up, round... black/white A5 (approx)

Castle picture, detailed, looking in, up, round... black/white A5 (approx)

This picture offers inspiration for creative writing, support for medieval history or castle study and colouring. It depicts an ancient, yet still creepily inhabited, crumbling castle. A mouse (or rat?), a fallen key, a twisty staircase, candlelight, a shadow at the casement window, a narrow passage, lit at the far end, a grand pillar, stone floors - they’re all there. I originally draw the picture to illustrate a castle poem in a book of mine, now out of print.

3 Castle-themed Action/Clapping Rhymes, guidance & embellishment tips, EY/KS1

3 Castle-themed Action/Clapping Rhymes, guidance & embellishment tips, EY/KS1

These 3 punchy rhymes bring the past alive. Their titles are: Who Lived in the Castle?, Bowing and Curtseying, and My Castle is Old. Each contain rhyme and rhythm, while offering scope for alternative words to be slotted in (notes below provide ideas for these). There is also scope for acting-out, adding sound effects and enhancing with percussion. Suggestions for all of these are provided. They serve to prepare children for writing about castles, also enriching their vocabulary, developing their sense of rhyme and rhythm, and providing a window on the past. In addition, they promote physical development: the actions involved are fun and imagination-triggering, encouraging creative expression and physical exertion. The rhymes and illustrations are my own. 3 sheets in total -PDF.

Ancient Egypt archaeological artifacts lesson.

Ancient Egypt archaeological artifacts lesson.

This is a fantastic lesson to get practical. The photos should be printed and laminated and then hidden in some manner. Preferably, hidden in sand to become a true archaeological dig, however they could also be hidden around the school or even just distributed throughout the classroom. Children will find an artifact, draw it, guess what it was used for and then use research or Google reverse image search to find what the item actually was. Makes a brilliant practical lesson with many possibilities. Note: All artifact images have been collated from a Google image search in order to make reverse image search accurate. Consequently, the copyright of these images remains with the individual or organisation.

Age of Exploration - Revision Cards

Age of Exploration - Revision Cards

These revision cards have designed to create a fun and interactive way for students to learn about the voyages of exploration and adventurers during the ***‘Age of Discovery’. *** They make an excellent fun starter, mini plenary or plenary to any lesson. They can also be used by students as revision flash cards. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a two page Microsoft Word Document which includes an instruction card and 11 revision cards on key the key explorers during the ***‘Age of Exploration’. ***These include Prince Henry the Navigator, Bartolomeu Diaz, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan,Cortes, John Cabot, Francis Drake, Hugh Willoughby, Sir Walter Raleigh and Ivan Moskvitin. This resource is fully editable so it can be customised to suit your students. There are three main ways that you can use them. Game 1 involves getting students to read out the key words until the other guesses the topic correctly. Game 2 involves additional challenge and stretch by getting students to describe the topic without using any of the key words on the card. The third game, which adds an additional layer of fun or challenge involves playing a round of Pictionary or Charades. I normally give my students 3 minutes of each round to help activate the learning and warm up the class. You could also have a freestyle round where students decide which game they want to play linked to their learning style. If you are trying to engage some under achieving boys, add some competition and get them to keep score in the back of their books. I would recommend printing them off on card and getting your students to cut them out. Then put the cards into an envelope for class use. If you are a student then keep them in your pocket and use them as a flash card to help you learn the key facts, If there is a term that you do not understand then as your teacher or do some extra research. From a revision perspective, you can print off the cards and get your students to learn the key words for a test or for their exams. These are a win, win resource. The kids will love them and they will help to improve your results. If you like this resource then why not check out my other resources on this topic in my TES shop. You can also follow ‘The History Academy’ on Twitter, Google Plus, YouTube and Facebook for the latest updates or even to get in touch and chat about how you have used this resource or to ask questions. We aim to produce cheap and affordable resources for either the price of a good cup of coffee or a happy meal so that you can spend more time doing the things that you want. Anyway, have fun using our resources with your students and stay in touch. Kind Regards Roy

All about Canada: 13 Webquests (EAL, ESL, and LINC)

All about Canada: 13 Webquests (EAL, ESL, and LINC)

Get students engaged by having them use tablets, iPads, or desktops to learn key facts about the Canadian provinces and territories online! These one-page webquests direct students to a Canadian government website in order to answer questions about provinces and territories. Because websites are provincial government websites, you can be sure the information will be accurate, and the website will be around for a long time. The webquests are primarily aimed at English language learners from CLB 1-3, but it could also be used in elementary school classes. They could also be adapted for use at higher levels: while the language is simple, the content is not. Finally, the webquests could be used by newcomers to Canada who are preparing for the Canadian citizenship examination. Each webquest took my class about an hour to complete. For your convenience, answer keys have been provided. Feedback is greatly appreciated.
