I have been a German and English teacher for more than 12 years now. And I love coffee breaks ☕️. Coffee is just great. Over the years I have realized how much my students benefit most from lessons where THEY are the leaders, where THEY are encouraged to be proactive and learn from each other. Handing over the reins to my students doesn’t make me weaker as a teacher. It makes them responsible for their own learning and is highly motivating. I don’t want my students to be sailors. I want them to be CAPTAINS! (And I want coffee!) My teaching resources are all designed to enable students to USE the language. This is why you will always find the communicative approach in my resources - even simple crosswords come with ideas for speaking activities. All of my resources have been tested in class and will be updated regularly. Please rate my resources to help me build a reputation among millions of resources. Thanks for working with me ☺️ Cindy ❤️ Please see my other resources, too: [https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/CindyKuehne]

Type in a word/phrase it the TL on one line and then the equivalent in English opposite it (as in the example). Do this within each inner section and then cut it up into cards. Pupils must then form a triangle with the cards by matching the TL to the English. Instructions are in the notes section of the PPT. It's worth Googling 'Tarsia puzzles'!

Reading Challenge template

Reading Challenge template

One of my personal favourites! Have a reading text in the box. In 2 teams, pupils choose a word to find in the text. The pupils don’t know what each word is worth. Click on the word they have chosen when they have correctly identified it in the text and their score will be revealed. The winning team is the team with the highest score once all words have been found in the text. 3 slides with different scores.

Use the space on each slide to enter the words/phrases you want pupils to memorise whilst they’re fading automatically. They could then either write them out or translate them either during the fade or after. Each slide takes 10, 20 and 30 seconds to fade out.

Dice rolling paragraph template

Dice rolling paragraph template

Pupils work in pairs to produce a paragraph on any given topic. They take it in turns to roll the dice. The phrase corresponding to their number is the one they have to use. When they’ve completed it, they then learn it. Good practice for learning to learn! They must also check that the phrase makes sense. If it doesn’t (incorrect tense, etc.), they must roll again. It’s a good idea to print this off as well.

These are small squares which can be printed off, laminated and stuck to your classroom tables to introduce Kagen techniques to your German classes. I have created examples in sets of 4, but these can be edited. They go three ways: by A/B, by 1-4, or by table. Enjoy!

Writing Practice in Collaboration with native German speakers or teacher/mentors

Writing Practice in Collaboration with native German speakers or teacher/mentors

Students often retain the effects of correction better when they make changes themselves. If they can do this under guidance from an expert helper, such as their teacher, mentor or foreign penfriend, so much the better. This writing activity is designed to work in the browser of any computer, iPad or tablet Teachers assign something they would like their students to write (they can create their own title if desired). It could be a sentence or two, an email, a letter or a full composition. The teacher tells their students to write their text at https://schoolshape.com/write. (If practising a foreign language accents are on the keyboard provided on tablets) The students write their text in the space. The students click the ‘send’ button and enter their expert helper’s email address. In the expert helper’s email inbox will be a message stating the name of the student and a link to their work. The expert helper will be able to make corrections to any orthographical mistakes in the work. The student will immediately see some red underlinings in his/her writing. The student will not see the corrected answer, but will have an opportunity to correct the work by following some hints generated by the system. At the foot of the student’s assignment there is a continuously updated record of the accuracy of his/her writing. You will notice that - when using the integrated keyboard on tablets, it will throw up useful options for foreign accents, making it quick and easy for students to input foreign language written assignments. - pasting text in from elsewhere has been disabled, thus discouraging plagiarism. - there is a built in inductive learning procedure. When work has been corrected by the teacher (or expert mentor, such as a penfriend), the student's work on the same assignment continues ... they can improve their percentage accuracy (displayed on their work) by following an automatic hint system guiding them towards the correct answer. Equipment required This browser activity is available on computers, tablets, iPads and smartphones. It could be done ‘live’ in class or as a homework assignment, or both.

Excellent reading/speaking activity 'FOOTBALL'

Excellent reading/speaking activity 'FOOTBALL'

Fabulous reading / speaking fun!! Adapted from an excellent english resource (from a colleague, I don't know the original, I'm sorry...). This can be adapted for any MFL and ability. Create a text document / print a webpage etc of suitable reading, about three/four paras is good. Pupils have up to 20 mins free access to dictionaries / online dictionaries. Help with idioms or complex language as needed. Then once ready, teams of equal ability (max. 4). One student starts to read and can be 'tackled' after 10 words for the definition / spelling etc. All instructions are in German and English but is completely adaptable. Pupils must shout 'tackle' or 'goal' in TL. Extremely good fun, have a whistle ready as referee!!

Minesweeper Plenary Game

Minesweeper Plenary Game

End your lessons with a bang ! Use this game as a plenary activity. This can be used for any subject and any year. E.g. MFL – translation of vocabulary Maths – answers to sums. History – dates, facts I personally have used it for pupils to translate vocabulary covered in a topic, scaffolding questions, starting with single words and then building up to more complex sentences. How to run the activity: Split the class into two groups or more. Teacher asks a question to each group. Teacher selects by hands up (or miniwhiteboards, or team discussion). Teacher selects a pupil to give the answer. If the answer is correct – pupil can choose a mine. If there's a coin under the bomb - one point for your team If there's an explosion under the bomb - lose one point If there's a super bomb - the rubber duck of the evil clown - lose 2 points. The team with the most points wins!

German Grand Prix Game Starter Plenary Revision

German Grand Prix Game Starter Plenary Revision

To celebrate the German F1 Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring I have created this interactive game for my German students. Enter your own questions and multiple choice answers and watch as two teams battle it out to be the first car past the finishing line. Possible instructions on the first slide. ENABLE ALL MACROS AND REDUCE SECURITY ON YOUR PC FOR THIS TO WORK PROPERLY. I will split my class up into two teams and give everybody a mini whiteboard. Pupils will write the answer of the question on their mini whiteboard and hold it up after my count down. The team with the most correct answers will be the team who's car will move around the screen (just click on the car) Enjoy, and I look forward to your feedback :)
