What happened in our world? March 27th, 2017

What happened in our world? March 27th, 2017

This is a simple crossword activity aiming to encourage students to ask about what's happening in our world. Download and then print this easy to use PDF and save time preparing for the next Economics, Geography, Business, or PSHE lesson. The puzzles are excellent for a lively and informative home room period or even a substitution lesson when the absent colleague hasn't left enough work. You save your precious time and the students get to learn about last week's news events. (You might even give them colleagues to keep them happy during staff meetings - but don't let the bosses catch you!)In this week's puzzle... Obamacare survived. Somali pirates released a Sri Lankan ship and crew. An avalanche in Japan and a cyclone in Queensland. New Zealanders submitted a petition to protest against water being sold to China, India, and the Middle East. Britain was attacked by a lone terrorist. And Vladimir told Marine that Russia won't meddle in France's presidential election. Of course the real value of this crossword is the discussion it'll generate... Why did these things happen? Why, of all the things that happened in the world, were these the events reported in the news? The wording of these news events is interesting too; is there any bias in the wording? The puzzles seem to work best when students work in pairs or groups of three, so they discuss the clues and therefore the events of their world. They work even better if the teacher does the puzzle with the students. There are two BONUS puzzles that focus on the United Kingdom's history and geography. Good for KS3 as well as older classes.

An analysis of the language used in Trump's immigration speech - Language features: Argue/Persuade

An analysis of the language used in Trump's immigration speech - Language features: Argue/Persuade

* students absolutely loved these lessons! If you're looking for something to engage students - this is the download for you! *A great, ready to go resource! No planning required. This resource was fantastic with both my year 9 and GCSE classes (differentiated for each). It outlines the conventions of writing/speaking to argue/persuade, then goes onto discuss some higher order rhetorical devices that Trump employs. There is plenty of differentiated work in the 9-slide PowerPoint, including Argue/Persuade features, as well as flaws in logic. The lesson includes: - An explanation and example of many persuasive/argumentative features such as direct address/hyperbole/triadic structure- An example of four annotated paragraphs from the speech- A student model of a comprehensive paragraph response- Several printable resources from the PowerPoint including a reminder of common techniques and features to argue/persuade- A success criteria for the written response. * New - annotation of the whole speech as a PDF file. There is enough work here for at least two hours; I broke the lessons down into one lesson looking at features and annotating and then the second writing an essay and reviewing the success criteria. All in all, the lesson could probably fill a week's worth of lessons if you do the following: Lesson 1 - annotate the speechLesson 2 - consider the effect and plan the included essayLesson 3 - write the essay. You could then follow it up by asking students to write a speech using the conventions they've covered. If you did this, there would be several weeks' work here. There are printable sheets that make up the slides, such as a model annotation and a model paragraph for students. This is a fab resource and I hope you find it as useful as I did!
